London - Emirates Air Line Cable Car - Done it?

Hi All,

I'll be visiting London in July and I'm thinking of doing the Emirates Air Line Cable car ride across the Thames in the evening. Has anyone done this? Do you feel it was worth it? I'm thinking of the photo opportunities I could get as the city turns from day to night (I know it's only 20 minutes round trip). I'm wondering if it's worth the price and if it's easy to get to? I'm staying near Marble Arch. I think it's located near Greenwich? Is it hard to get to ? What else is there to do in the area, that would make it more 'worthwhile' in terms of the time it takes to get over there?

Thanks for any info you might have. :)

:) Enjoy,
Gretchen

It's a fun ride, but you don't get extensive views of London - you get views of the O2 dome and a few hotels, conference centres etc. It's not even in the part of Greenwich that is scenic. It's a loooong way east of London's main sights.

As someone has said, it's a ride between two parts of London that aren't particularly interesting or that you would particularly want to go to.

But the ride itself is a lot of fun.

I've done it during the day and it's a bit of fun if you're in the area. It's 4mins one way, so 20mins will include some 'non flying' time.

In July it's daylight here until gone 10pm, so you'll have a long wait for a night flight.

It's very easy to get to, right outside Royal Vicoria on the DLR ( Central Line from Marble Arch to Bank, change to DLR then 8 stops to RV ).

The views are nice, but quite non-traditional in terms of London views... they are all modern buildings.

A nice trip I did with my parents was to get the River Bus ( or Tourist boat ) from Westminster to Greenwich, spend a few hours there, nice views from the Observatory, Prime Meridian Line, markets and shops, Maritime College and Museum, Cutty Sark, Brewery, etc.

Then back on the River Bus 1 stop to North Greenwich and the south Cable Car Terminal, one trip over and then back into London on the DLR and Tube.

I'm not sure i'd make the effort to do the cable car only, you might be a little underwhelmed. Also note, if its a windy day, the Cable Car stops running.

Have fun :o)

It is the Cutty Sark at .Greenwich, not the Mary Rose, which is at Portsmouth. If that makes any difference.

Hi Gretchen:

Back in 2012 the Emirates Air Line had just opened to transport folks from O2 to the ExCel Olympics venue. I took this cable car to get to the fencing competition. Here is my blog for that day that includes photographs of my ride:

On the day that I "flew" the attendants were lax in enforcing the one ride per fee policy so I was able to make several consecutive crossings on just one ticket. As noted by others the Air Line goes over an uninteresting part of London. However, I was on my way to the Olympics which made this exciting. My recommendation: skip this unless you have business or tourist interest in O2 or ExCel - use your saved money to pay for a ride on the London Eye or for a ride to the public observation platform at the Shard.
