London-Dover Day Trip

Hi all!

I’m planning my first trip to the UK with my parents. We will be in London for 5 days and it’s on my parents bucket list to see the White Cliffs of Dover. We’re planning a day trip to Dover (from London) via train/rail and wondering if it is a terrible idea to do this on a Sunday in October? Sunday would be the best fit for our current itinerary. Please help!

TLDR: is Sunday an okay day for a London-Dover day trip?

You can definitely do a day trip to Dover on a Sunday in October. The best way to experience the cliffs is to walk along them- there's a great clifftop path that starts near the port. The only thing is that the weather in October can be a little unpredictable and you don't want to be doing that walk in the rain, so you might want to wait till a few days before to check the forecast and book your tickets. If you're spending time in Dover you may also want to visit the castle which has some interesting tunnels dug for WWII.

actually Sundays this October may not be a good idea, and Saturdays are only slightly better, because of track engineering work, There seem to be NO fast train form London St Pancras and only a few slower trains, with lots of replacement buses going as far as Ashford or Folkestone to meet up with London trains. the final Sunday (26th) looks OK, but remember it's clock change morning..

Thank you so much for your insight! I saw a bit about engineering work being done on the weekends and that was my concern. Sounds like it’ll be best to move it to a weekday!

We would likely go on Tuesday instead. Is there anything I should be concerned about traveling via rail/train on a Tues in October?

Thanks again for your help!
