Hi,
This summer we are traveling to London. For 4 days, we'd like to get out of the city and visit Stow on the Wold, stay 2 nights, then
visit Bath for one night, then return to London. We would prefer not to rent a car. Has anyone done this via trains/coaches? Any lessons learned/tips?
Thank you in advance!
We’re hoping to find one-way transportation from London to Bath via the Cotswolds in one long day. After a few days in bath, we’re flying out of nearby Bristol to other parts of Europe, so that we don’t have to return to London. We prefer not to drive as neither of us wants to drive on the left side of the road, Hopefully there is streamlined public transportation that can take us where we want
The clue to both above queries is Pulham's bus services- mainly the 801 from Moreton in the Marsh station, but also local bus 802 to Kingham station (on the same line from Paddington).
The 801 extends on to Cheltenham Spa and runs every 90 minutes so for the 2nd enquiry above they want the train which arrives at Moreton at 0917, then catch the 0925 bus. The service improves from Easter to be every hour, from then departures from Moreton are at xx.45.
The problem then is there is no direct bus from Cheltenham to Bath.
It can be done but takes several changes. Someone disparingly wrote on another thread the other day (just to prove their point) that the journey needs a PhD in planning, so not worth wasting my and your time on.
So it is another bus to Cheltenham Spa railway station, then train changing at Bristol Temple Meads.
Thus the most streamlined way from Stow on the Wold (or most places in the Cotswolds, with a few exceptions) to Bath is bus back to Moreton or Kingham then train changing at Didcot Parkway.
