London Consecutive 2 day peak travel card....I'm so confused.

My wife and I will be traveling to London this summer arriving on August 10 at Victoria Station initially but staying in the Camden Town area until we depart from Gatwick on August 14. We plan to visit the usual sightseeing sights such as the palace and possibly a Thames cruise as well as taking in a football match and also visiting the IWM in Duxford. I'm looking at the various travel card / Oyster card options and it's making my head spin with the different options. Our boys, ages 15 and 12 will be with us and I now see some sort of young person discount for kids between 11-15 which is great.....if I knew exactly how this worked. It LOOKS like the most cost effective option is to simply buy an Oyster card at Liverpool Street station when we arrive for all of us but I don't know. It looks like the 2 for 1 sightseeing options aren't worth it really. We don't yet know which stadium we will be seeing the match at as the schedule hasn't been released and we don't have tickets yet, which we probably won't have until mid - late June. I also see a Consecutive 2 day peak travel card which would probably work out but I don't understand how those work.

Insights from everyone greatly appreciated.

All you need to know is the regular Oyster Card has a daily cap of £7 in zones 1 and 2, which includes most of the tourist sights. That is hard to beat.

I am not familiar with a 2-day Pass, other than the 2-day London Pass for £114.

Since the most you will pay for 2 days' travel with Oyster daily cap is £14, you would have to see attractions worth £100 over the two days to make the pass worthwhile. That is hard to do.

Get the Oyster card at Victoria, load them with £30 credit each. Get the Oyster card deposit (£5) and the remaining balance refunded when you leave by returning the cards. As mentioned, there is a price cap of £7’ish per day for unlimited Zone 1-2 travel, which covers mostly anywhere you will want to go.

Are you flying in via Gatwick too? If so a return ticket would qualify you for the 2for1 offers on its own.

You ask a TFL employee by the ticket machines to add the "young persons discount" to your boys oyster cards.

Thanks for that link, Harley. I have an Oyster I just bring with me each time I visit London, but I have not kept current. Some handy new features. Also, I was able to link out to the bus maps for tfl - also great to keep in mind.

To OP: I was able to speak with actual people selling the Oyster when I landed at Heathrow - Terminal 5. Not sure if there are these info booths at each terminal, but asking questions of a person may alleviate some of the angst instead of trying to figure out options on the ticket machine.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. We arrive into England on the overnight ferry from Netherlands and then the train from Harwich to Liverpool station before going to the flat we have rented in Camden town. It looks like we can simply buy the Oyster cards at Liverpool on arrival and go from there.

I’ve seen something about a zip Oyster card for youth ages 11-15. How would this work?

The zip oyster card is designed for children that live in London, for getting to school etc.

You want the "Young Visitor" discount on the boys' Oyster Cards. See a staff person at the sale window and they will load it on the cards ( they need to see proof of age to confirm eligibility).

Zip cards can be for anyone of the right age, at least up to 15, but the fees and bureaucracy make it sensible only for frequent visitors to London. The young visitor discount whilst not as much is easier to get and free.

The rail tickets bookending your London stay would get you the 2for1. so worth getting Gatwick tickets for your departure date if you want to take advantage of it even once.

Thank you. We arrive on the ferry from Netherlands at Harwich, then transfer to the train which we take to Liverpool street station in London. Looks like the Oyster cards are the best way to go once we arrive. Then we will continue on to the flat we have rented nest Camden Town. I have seen a 2 day consecutive Travel Card and was considering this option but it doesn’t look like it makes sense. To get to Gatwick, it looks like pre buying GatwickExpress tickets would be best for when we leave on the 14th.

As for going to IWM Duxford, it looks like we will have to purchase separate train tickets which I knew. Just trying to figure out the best option or station to start that journey from.

There are trains to Gatwick from St Pancras International or Kentish Town - no need to get the Gatwick Express from Victoria.,
