We'll be staying in London for a few days in October and then heading to Milan. One of our options is to fly Alitalia out of London City Airport. I've never used that airport before. Does anyone have any experience with it in terms of time to get through security and easiest way to get to it from central London?.
It is an easy and quick airport, because it is small.
Access: It has it's own station on the DLR. Click here for a tube map and look at the border of squares D9 and E9, bottom right on map. You will see a station named "London City Airport".
It is built in the former docks, and is surrounded by water on 3 sides. This limits the length of the runway and it can only take short take off and landing aircraft. Click here for a photo, this is looking west towards the centre of London. It specialises in short haul.
The only reason I haven't yet used it is that it always seems to be somewhat more expensive than my other choices like Luton or Gatwick.
But if you have a good fare - or somebody else is paying - go for it.
For departures London City Airport in my recent experience is not what it was. It is a victim of its own success. In the morning and evening rushes the check in areas are far too small and it is like a zoo throughout with little personal space, crowded security and nowhere to sit down. Without checked bags, and maybe out of peak time & at weekends it may be more like it used to be.
Arrival though remains great.
