London-Casual Indian Restaurants?

Hi,

What are you favorite Indian Restaurants in London? We are really looking for sit down casual family friendly places that are not too fancy/expensive. We like spicy Indian (not afraid if it's hot). We are traveling from San Francisco with our 8 & 10 year old boys. Thanks!

Best,
Suzanne

We really like Masala Zone---great food in a casual atmosphere like a bistro.

We have eaten at the Covent Garden and Soho locations and enjoyed both.

Another option, a bit fancier and more expensive, but quieter and not so "trendy" is Masala Grill on Kings Road in Chelsea. it may be part of the same group as Masala Zone---not sure about that. For this place, getting there is half the fun. We rode the 11 bus there, with seats right in front upstairs. And returned by Thames boat from the Chelsea Harbour dock.

Indian food will be available everywhere...not sure where you are staying, you can get info. from hotel staff...

this is near THE ANGEL TUBE...not far from Hictchcock's studio, about a 10 minute tube ride from Kings Cross. I have eaten here since 1990! Check website, as with many Indian restauants, lunch may be a buffet, dinner ordered a la carte. VEGETARIAN restaurant...the kids may like the thali!

A few blocks from Waterloo station in the East End is an entire street of casual Indian and Balti restaurants. We've eaten at a couple and the food has always been good. I was not impressed with the "Light of India" restaurant on Gloucester Rd a block from the Gloucester tube stop. It's hard to find a bad Indian restaurant in the UK.

Two offbeat suggestions:

  1. Hare Krishna restaurant just north of Soho Square on way to Oxford Street. (Tube: Tottenham Court Rd.) Cheap and decent. Also good for snacks. I worked in an office in Soho Square in the 1980s and used to go frequently. Last time was 2013.
  2. Indian YMCA Fitzroy Square (Tube: Warren St.) residence canteen. Anyone can stay and eat. My mother heard about this place and dragged / took us there in 1980. I stayed in 1994 or 1999. Very spicy, authentic Indian food. Cheaper than chips. Set menu £8.50 à la carte curries £2 Good for Bloomsbury day. http://www.indianymca.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Menu-2017-April.pdf

We've been eating at Punjab for the last 26 years, to be precise! We stumbled across it on our first trip to London when we were looking for something different on our last night there. We had dinner, walked to the Thames to listen to Big Ben strike 10PM, and then went back to our hotel. From then on that's been our tradition for our last night in London every time we are there! It's a great little restaurant with very authentic food. Not super fancy...just great Indian food! It's just a few minutes walk from Trafalgar Square.
