London Accommodation - near Covent Garden

Hello

My husband and I will be in London for 4 nights this fall. I am looking for recommendations for a budget friendly hotel or apartment hotel near Covent Garden / Seven Dials (edit - I will also consider suggestions for hotels in the surrounding area — 15-20 minute walking distance). We do like to walk to restaurants, the theatre and other sights.

We did stay in a triple room at the Seven Dials Annex building a year ago. We loved the location but the annex room was horrible. The bathroom felt dirty and grimy. The beds were not comfortable and one of the beds had the mattress placed upside down. The microscopic bathroom had a motion controlled light so the person on the toilet needed to wave their hand or the person in the shower had to stick their hand outside the shower to keep the windowless bathroom light on. This waving had to be done every few minutes. The windows had to be held open by a piece of cardboard and I had no confidence in the security of the building. It wasn’t great.

Over the years I’ve stayed in hostels, BnBs with the toilet down hall and other inexpensive accommodations so I don’t have unrealistic expectations. We have rented flats and we have also stayed at other Rick Steves recommended hotels near Victoria station. The Seven Dials Annex has a great location but was simply not acceptable. Maybe the main Seven Dials hotel is better, I don’t know.

In any case, we will be in London again and we are looking for a place to stay for 2 adults. We like the lively atmosphere in and around Seven Dials/Covent Garden and surroundiing area. I have looked into The Strand, and the Premier Inn Leicester Square which both seem reasonably priced.

Can anyone recommend a clean, not super expensive hotel / flat etc near Seven Dials or Covent Garden or surrounding area?

Thank you!!!

The Premier Inns are often recommended by forum members for their quiet rooms and comfortable beds. The Leicester square one would be the closest one to Covent Garden.

There is a Hub by Premier on St Martin's Ln, but I hesitate to recommend it due to the small size of the rooms.

Covent Garden is ground zero for tourists so generally commands a premium. Z hotels are clean but the rooms are tiny. The Strand Palace hotel you can get rooms for about £190 a night, which whilst not very cheap still represents value for the standard of hotel and location.

There is a Premier Inn in Leicester Square but Leicester Square is, for me at least, one of the worst addresses in London.

If you are willing to consider somewhere else Premier Inn in Farringdon has terrific restaurants nearby, is on the doorstep of St Paul's cathedral, has some superb pubs in the vicinity, is a short hop on the Elizabeth line to Tottenham Court Road for theatres, and the hotel is a third cheaper than Leicester Square.

The reality is that there will be lots of restaurants within walking distance of any hotel within central London - you really do not need to be in the Covent Garden area for that. Many of those in and around Covent Garden are specifically geared to the tourist market and ones I would give a wide berth (although there are also plenty of excellent ones as well).

Booking.com is a good place for research. You do not have to book through them, just get ideas. However due to fees, not all hotels are listed on booking.

Not in Covent Garden, it's in Russell Square, on Piccadily line one stop after Covent Garden. I found Celtic hotel, budget hotel with pretty good reviews.
They have option ensuite or share bathroom, and option to add breakfast.
I booked a single room ensuite with breakfast for Sept 2027 for 114pounds.

I like Premier Inn too, but haven't been able to find a cheaper rate than this. And i only stay one night for before and after my walking holiday.

A 15-20 minute walk from Covent Garden covers a large area of central London, taking you north towards Bloomsbury, south over the river to the south bank, west towards Regent and Oxford Streets and east to the City. There will be lots of accommodation options and even more restaurants etc.
If you want to be really near Covent Garden, the Strand Palace is a good option.

I stayed at that Premier Inn. The rooms are small but well designed and comfortable for the size. The location is perfect, you can walk just about everywhere from there. The breakfast is bad.

We stayed at Z Hotel Covent Garden 2 years ago. It was clean and the staff was amazing. It is tight as most rooms are but adequate. They have a nice Cafe too.

We stayed at the Hub and can recommend it. The rooms are small, but most of the budget options in London have small rooms and this one is much better laid out than most. The location can't be beat - turn the corner and you're on Trafalgar Square.

Another poster recommended the Celtic, which is our favourite budget hotel in London. As noted, its near Russell Square, so a 10 minute walk from Soho, but only a few minutes to the British Museum, and there is a really nice pub kitty corner called the Friend At Hand.

I haven't stayed at that particular Premier Inn, but just an FYI, breakfast is not included in Premier Inn prices so there is no need to eat there. I usually enjoy going out for a bite someplace like Gail's Bakery or Pret a Manger or a nearby cafe or coffee shop. Premier Inns are generally very good hotels for the price, and are consistently clean and comfortable. They're a good value for the money, in my opinion, and I've stayed at a number of them.

If you really want to stay in Covent Garden, then I would go with the Leicester location. There are others, though, that are not that far, such as the Premier Inn Victoria, Premier Inn Kensington, and so on. I've stayed at the Premier Inn County Hall, which is near the London Eye (not that I went there), but is a very good location. It is one of the newer PIs, and I really liked the hotel and the location. The Premier Inn Waterloo is another PI just up the street from the County Hall location. It's an older and a smaller property, but that means the prices are lower usually.

Regardless, there are a number of good restaurants and other places to eat nearby, including the aforementioned Gail's Bakery. Plus you're a hot, skip and a jump from Westminster—it's a quick walk over the Westminster Bridge.

I had a lovely walk one night from the hotel to Covent Garden to see a show. The route takes you over the Jubilee Bridge and it was gorgeously lit up with beautiful lights and colors. The Thames at night is really amazing. People were out and about, and I really enjoyed the walk. It was about a mile from the hotel to the theatre (the Ambassador), and was about a 20 minute walk. I walked back as well (it was about 9:30pm) and enjoyed it just as much. Of course, you could always get a taxi if you like or Uber.
