London 2for1 with unused rail ticket

Hello all,
I've been reading up both inside RS forums and out about the National Rail 2for1 offers. We are interested in the London main sites and, with a family of 6, this would be a large savings. My question is about qualifying journeys (e.g., National Rail)

I'm considering purchasing zone 1-2 travel cards (I know they have to be the physical cards from National Rail office) to use for the offer. However, I've read some folks have purchased RT 'dummy' tickets for a short journey (and lesser cost) as another option. I understand that the inbound ticket would need to be used (and the RT open or at the end our our trip).

I'm wondering if anyone has used this method lately? I've searched the forums, but didn't find anything recent.
Also: do the tickets collected from machines have the needed national rail logo?

More info: We are in London 8 days; we are visiting relatives in Farnborough (45min west).
Many thanks,

Last question first- any ticket purchased from a Clerk at a National Rail station or at a National Rail Ticket Machine has the National Rail logo at the bottom left of the ticket (I've just looked to be sure of the position). It is actually the old British Rail logo (before privatisation)- what is called the double arrow logo.

If you purchase any ticket and actually use it then there isn't a problem. The issue, or potential issue rather (and the issue is with the accepting attractions, not anyone here) is that the rock bottom fare is one that is disputable as a real journey that anyone would actually make, and doesn't get you within reasonable reach of any participating attraction. and where some people don't use the actual ticket. If you are buying a ticket for a real journey (any sensible journey to an actual terminus station), and really using it, then there isn't a problem.

The advice given here is, at the end of the day, to stop you being potentially embarrassed when trying to use the scheme. We do also have a duty of care on this forum under the Community Guidelines. Last time this matter was raised it all became rather heated, which was deeply unfortunate.
It sounds like you intend to buy and use a ticket, so no issues there. If you buy a return and don't use the return half that doesn't matter a jot.
