We are planning a September trip to England and have always had success with Rick Steve's recommended lodging. However, some are fully booked for our dates and so we'd appreciate suggestions. A lot of suggestions I've found in the forums are quite old. We are looking at places that would be in his $$ to $$$ category. On previous trips we have enjoyed some of the smaller B&Bs he has recommended, but these often to book up early if they are listed in a travel book. We're starting in London and have that booked. For the rest of the itinerary: Moreton-in-Marsh (3 nights), Stratford (2 nights), Oxford (2 nights), Bath (2 nights), Portsmouth (2 nights), last night some place near Heathrow.

Portsmouth has fewer nice hotels than you’d expect, but for smallish boutique hotels, take a look at Florence Gardens, the Ship Leopard or Becketts.
Otherwise there’s a bunch of chain hotels (well located Premier Inn right near the beach) or the faded grandeur of the Queen’s Hotel.
