I'll be exploring Northumbland via rental car for a few days this coming June, ending with a morning flight out of Newcastle Airport. I'm considering where to book lodging the night before my plane. I'm generally not one to stay at airport hotels, but in this case I'm wondering if it might be a good idea, just to minimize any hassle the morning of my flight. The RS England guidebook is pretty light on Newcastle details. Can anyone recommend Newcastle hotels and/or neighborhoods for lodging that would make a convenient (& comfortable) short stop-over? I'll still have the rental vehicle, so public transport is not an issue, but I don't want to drive too far if I can avoid it. Thanks.
As you have a rental car I don’t think you’d want to stay at a hotel in central Newcastle because parking will likely be off site adding to your hassle in the morning.
The airport hotels would be quite convenient. The airport is connected to the Metro light rail system so you can easily make a short trip into Newcastle if you have time to explore and then back again to sleep.
You could also stay in Morpeth - it is only a 30 minute drive to the airport, either down the A1 or via Ponteland (basically the airport bus route)
EDIT- Thinking more about this Otterburn is only 45 minutes drive away. There are various places to stay there right up to Otterburn Castle Country House Hotel- way beyond my budget. The Butter Churn is more my sort of place.
Thanks for the suggestions. I wound up booking a hotel in Newcastle. I found one that was cheaper than the airport hotels, but still pretty close by.
