Locations to visit between London and Edinburgh via Public Transportation

We (couple) will be travelling via public transit between London and Edinburgh between RS tours in June 2020. We have never been to the UK.

We aren't interested in renting a car, and hope that we can get suggestions of places to spend some nights between the separate RS England and Scotland tours. The RS England tour will be spending 2 nights in York, so not sure if an additional stay there is warranted. It would be great to access a stop easily from a train stop, but we are not adverse to bussing if to a recommended location.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

Newcastle, Durham, Alnmouth (for Alnwick) and Berwick are all on the train line from London to Edinburgh.

You could explore the Tyne Valley and Hadrian’s Wall; explore Northumberland either inland or its coast and castles; take a bus from York to Whitby and explore the North York Moors.

Depends on how many days you have. There’s a lot to see in the north east.
