due to the attack last night on the train between Peterborough and Huntingdon resulting in the issues with the trains on the East Coast Main Line the train company LNER has asked people not to travel today on their trains
LNER have now removed the Do Not Travel Today message and now ask passengers to check before travel. Reports of 30 minute to significantly longer delays. Huntingdon station is closed and all trains are non-stopping that station which is closed.
LNER now has announced that their tickets for today will be valid tomorrow and on Tuesday.
Cala, I refer you to a statement this morning by Supt John Loveless (British Transport Police): "at this stage there is nothing to suggest this is a terrorist incident." He goes on to say "At this early stage it would not be appropriate to speculate on the causes of the incident."
Nigel's post is accurate. It reflects Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood's statement about 30 minutes ago:
"We now know this attack is not being treated as terrorism, and that two British-born, British nationals have been arrested."
I am curious, if this is two bad guys doing an isolated bad thing; why are people asked to stay off the trains? Is one train going off line or off schedule that disrupting?
As regards travel the latest update is that tickets for Saturday and today will be available for travel on all LNER trains until close of service on Friday 7 November. This applies to all ticket types, even train specific Advance Fares. You are advised to make a new free seat reservation on the LNER website or app.
Huntingdon station is closed until at least the end of Monday 3 November.
Mr E.
The train is still at the station, as it's a crime scene. The station is closed till at least tomorrow.
Initially people were advised not to travel due to the number of cancellations. The situation has eased a bit, but there is still a restricted service on what it the main line to the north and Scotland on the east coast.
Oh, I didnt realize they only had one train for the route. Okay,
Thank you, Nigel. I’m not there but would be glad to have your updates if I were.
Same as Texas Travel Mom, thanks for the updates Nigel.
Mr E, Huntingdon is a suburban station used only by Great Northern and Thameslink. It was an emergency stop by LNER, on a 12 car platform, so long enough for the purpose.
The local trains are running, more or less normally, except this stop.
It is a 4 track section, so other trains can bypass the crime scene train on the southbound platform line.
It's a horrific event, regardless of what it's called. I sincerely hope the most seriously injured pull through, and that the children who witnessed the attack aren't left with long-term PTSD.
Regarding the question of calling it terrorism or not in the UK, this turned up:
https://www.cps.gov.uk/types-crime/terrorism
The key point seems to be, "The use or threat must also be for the purpose of advancing a political, religious, racial or ideological cause."
Well done keeping travelers informed of the rail complications, Nigel.
Note that, whilst Huntingdon station remains closed LNER trains are by and large running OK today.
However, there was a derailment on the west coast line in Cumbria which means that line is currently closed north of Preston. That means that the LNER services are likely to be very busy as Glasgow bound passengers are also using that route. My wife and I are enjoying a half empty train that should go to Glasgow but will stop at Preston, where we live anyway.
