Liverpool in a Day

I have read numerous forum posts on what to do in Liverpool. Most are by those who will be spending more than the one day I have available for our tour of the city. I realize that one day is a short period, not appropriate for what could be experienced, but it's what I have to work with.

My wife wants to do a tour that encompasses the Beatles history. That is the primary objective. Secondary objective is to fit in the UNESCO world heritage site, Albert Dock, the Magical Mystery tour and the National Trust tour.

I know that I am trying to cram 10 pounds into a 5 pound bag, but that is the way that it is and it isn't going to change. So my question is from what geographical point would I start this process using a HoHo bus, tour bus, guided tour, tour guide, or whatever method makes it "somewhat" streamline. I will have a rental car, but driving around Liverpool is not my first desire.

Other than the Beatles thing for my wife, everything else is negotiable.

I am open to all suggestions and thanks in advance for them.

I would do either the Magical Mystery tour or the National Trust Tour, the Beatles Story Museum which is on Albert Dock, then go over to the Cavern and Mathew street, from there, it’s an easy walk back to Lime Street train station.

If you do the NT tour, do that first, it’ll start and end at the Jury Inn which is a quick walk to the Beatles Story. It’ll be a ten minute walk to the Mathew Street/Cavern area from the museum.

If you do the MMT, do the Beatles Story first, the MMT starts right there outside the museum and ends at the Cavern.

If that’s too Beatles heavy, there are numerous other museums on th Albert Docks. You can easily fit in a 30 minute stroll around the docks as well into either plan I listed above.

We had one day in Liverpool while our cruise ship docked there. Near the cruise port we took photos with the large Beatles statue in that area. Then walked the very short walk to the Liverpool Museum which is free...they take donations. They had an interesting John and Yoko exhibit. Then a short walk to Albert Dock and walked around. We had a chocolate Puffle Waffle at the Puffle Waffle there. Very yummy. Then went on the Liverpool wheel ride. Then we took the Magical Mystery Tour which was fun. That tour ended at the Cavern Club and included admission there. So we hung out in the club a while and then walked back to the dock to get back on board the ship. It was a fun day!

If you plan to go to the Beatles Story museum, buy your tickets online to save time. When I was there I walked right in, but coming out I saw an entire busload of Scandinavian tourists waiting to buy entry one by one, so I would probably have been delayed half an hour if I'd happened to arrive after them.

When you drive into Liverpool, assuming you're coming in via the M62 and Edge Lane, you can park at the World Museum. It's right opposite the roundabout that adjoins the tunnel to the Wirral Peninsula, so if you are coming from Wales / Wirral it's also very convenient. You can pay by phone and top up your time if you end up staying longer than the time you've initially paid, without having to run back and insert coins. It is right around the corner from the rebuilt Cavern Club and (just beyond that) Hard Day's Night Hotel.

We had a wonderful one-day Liverpool visit, arriving about 11 AM and leaving about 5 PM.

National Trust Tour, the Beatles Story, and Magical Mystery tour is the plan. I looked the Puffle Waffle place online. It is now definitely on our list as well.

I am glad to know by virtue of csolinda comment about the HOHO cruise excursion thing (we’ve done that) that a one dayer is possible.

epltd> I have taken your suggestion and pre-purchased our ticket. T/ U

Visitors come to America to see what we have. They will never see it all during their vacation time and I won’t see it all in Liverpool - or another country for that matter. If we miss something, it will be OK.

Thanks to all of your for your help.

Prost!

The NT and MMT are very different. The NT focuses only on John and Paul's childhood houses. There's also a lot of post World War II Liverpool history included in the overview. If you're lucky, the guide might point out a few sights along the way.

The MMT is a comprehensive view of the Beatles Liverpool. You get off the bus for photo ops at George Harrison's house, Paul's house, Penny Lane and Strawberry Field. You don't get to enter any of them, but you can walk a bit on Penny Lane since it's just a street. The MMT is more animated, there's Beatles music playing constantly as well as commentary from the guide.

I've done both of the tours twice. They're both excellent. It is fine to do both in one day if you're a fan. A casual fan might get a bit 'Beatled out' by doing both.

I'd suggest the inexpensive souvenir guide at the Beatles Story which is 2 pounds 50, the NT tour guides books are also well worth it for about 7 pounds, the MMT sells a Beatles map of Liverpool for about 3 pounds. They're all worth it and certainly not outrageously priced.

I always recommend a taxi tour to complement the National Trust tour, you can tell your driver to skip seeing the outside of places you've already seen both inside and outside.

This is a follow-up to my original post. We drove the rental, which was an "interesting" adventure, to Albert Dock and from there got on the MMT bus. After which we walked around some of the outlying area near the dock. It was a good day. Thanks to everyone for the tips.
