Liverpool anyone?

I'm planning a three week trip to the UK, primarily to visit London, but I wanted to make time to go to Liverpool. I really want to visit the Slavery Museum and maybe do the Liverpool FC tour.

Oh, I also heard there were these fabulous four guys that had a band, and they were from Liverpool; maybe you've heard of them....... :-)

I don't see many posts about Liverpool on this forum, so I thought I'd ask a few questions.

  1. Right now, the plan is to take the train and spend a 2 days in the city. Is that enough time?
  2. Any good recs on a place to stay? I'm a solo female traveler and I'd like to stay in the city center.

Feel free to add anything else - thanks for your help!

You don't say which time of the year you are visiting but I would say if it is during the football season you should try to get to a match at Anfield as well as visiting the museum. There really is nowhere like it terms of a matchday experience.

As far as other things to do.
Tate Liverpool modern art museum.
Ferry across the Mersey. Gives view of Liverpool plus they play the song over the tannoy which is guaranteed to make one cry (or perhaps its just me)
Both cathedrals.
Philharmonic Pub in Hope Street, especially the toilets. Look it up Trip Advisor!
Walker Art Gallery
Beatles childhood homes Now owned by National Trust (Lennon & McCartney) These tours need to be booked

I can't suggest where to stay but there are lots of chain hotels and good b&bs to be found in Liverpool but that would depend on your taste and budget.

We've done Liverpool three times, mainly for LFC (search trip reports to read about going to Carra's last game), but really enjoy the city overall.

there's not really any B&Bs for budget accommodation. Our first trip we stayed at the Aachen, but that was way back in 2000 so I can't say if it is still nice. Since then we've stayed at Premier Inn at Albert Dock and at City Centre (Hanover St). Albert Dock was a bit nicer but costs more. Book early and pay in advance for great rates.

for us, two days isn't enough but it would be a good start.

By the way I read LFC has implemented a tour bus that will take you from city centre to Anfield for a tour, including admission and a drink at the Boot Room. Its like the ones used on victory parades, might be fun especially as a solo traveler-a way to meet people.

you will find the people to be generous and friendly when you display enthusiasm for the city.

CG, having just returned from my first trip over I can say that 2 days may be enough, or not. We were there less than 24 hours and I could have stayed at least 2 nights. We stayed at the Hilton across from the Albert Docks which I thought was a good location. We did see a Premier hotel and a Formule1 hotel also nearby. I highly recommend the Magical Mystery Tour which can be found at www.cavernclub.org. Plan on at least 2 hours minimum for their tours. I can only say that with the limited time we spent there I would have liked to have gone back to the places that we saw on the tour. I would have also liked to have seen the Cathedral and explore Liverpool itself more.
Remember, if you do not see everything that you would like to see, you can always go back! Good luck!

Not very far from Liverpool, just north and reachable by train is Formby. Owned by the National Trust and adjacent to the village of the same name, Formby is one of the last refuges of the beautiful red squirrel. You can easily find them, and you are even encouraged to feed them.

I'm so glad this thread is here! We are going to be in London for Christmas this year and a trip to Liverpool is mandatory this time. My husband is a huge Liverpool FC fan and we, too, will be doing a tour. (We toured Arsenal's stadium in March and it was fantastic.) We'll catch a football match in London -- seems too difficult to try to catch a match in Liverpool when we're only going to be there for the day. I didn't notice when you were going, but the UK's Groupon had a Big Bus Tour for two adults for 9 pounds. Even though you're traveling solo, I think this is cheaper than a single adult ticket! Now that we've firmed up our plans, I'm going to buy one. http://www.groupon.co.uk/deals/liverpool/city-sightseeing-liverpool-1-10/46197862

For more choice in football matches, remember that Everton is Liverpool's second team and avid Merseyside rival. Any supporter will assure you that the atmosphere is equally intense. Neither club has had an exactly stellar first two months of this season.
