My AA flight from New York gets in to Terminal 3 in LhR and my connecting BA flight is from Terminal 5 the same afternoon. Baggage transfer is done by the airlines It’s not clear if going from Terminal 3 to 5 is airside or does it require to go through immigration & customs. So, do I need a ETA or is it not required? Airlines are unable to tell me if it is airside or not.
You don't cross the UK border so stay airside no ETA is needed.

You neglected one piece of information.....where are you flying to from Heathrow.
If you are leaving the UK, you don't go through immigration but you do go through security. If you are staying in the UK, you will go through immigration--a special area for transfers and not the main immigration area--and security.
Use the Heathrow Connecting flight link given in the previous response for detailed instructions.
If your connecting flight is out of the UK, then you don't need an ETA. If your connecting fight is within the UK then you do need an ETA.
Thank you both! Very helpful
