Any suggestions on the best way to get to/from LHR to Dover port? Can only find private transfers , $300. + I know train would be best option, but ....... lugging luggage , transferring stations....strikes/disruptions, Help!
The train is probably the best option. Just how much luggage will you have? If you can move it through the airport, climb a flight of stairs carrying it, then the train shouldn’t be too hard.
I hope you are staying in Dover the night before the cruise as a buffer against airline delays. If you aren't I would be concerned if there was a strike. In fact if there wasn't a strike the timings for a same day cruise are too tight to be comfortable. Say you arrive at 0700, are out of the airport by 1000 [bear in mind ongoing Border Force strikes], that is 12 noon from St Pancras, 1310 arrive Dover, taxi to port. If any delays it's oooo...
The rail route is- Piccadilly Line Heathrow to Kings Cross direct (any other route needs a change), then south eastern High Speed St Pancras International- a 68 minute journey from £17.50 advance fare.
The only non train route is by National Express- just three times a day, changing at London Victoria. The times vary by day but 1 departure between 7am and 8am, then the next one around 4pm, and the third at 6pm.
In any event, unless the cruise company is providing a shuttle from the station, it's a taxi to the port or your hotel, then taxi hotel to port. Ensure the taxi driver knows it's the cruise port (and which terminal), not the ferry port. They are totally separate.
These days I'd be worrying if arriving from overseas the same day as a cruise departs.
with changes at the airline end and difficulties here in England I'd want more security.
Can you give us any more details?
What time is the flight? Boarding time in Dover?
How soon is important too....
