LHR airport time frame for transfers

We will be flying from Charlotte, NC to Vienna, Austria with a layover at LHR in December.

We have an option of a 2 hr layover & a 3 hr layover.

We have never been to this airport - we usually transfer thru AMS or CDG.
Would 2hrs be enough, or would you choose the 3hr?

This will be AA from CLT to LHR and then British Airways from LHR to VIE.

This is one ticket booked MultiCity as we are flying back home from Munich.

Thank You

I've easily made connecting flights with a 2 hour layover at LHR, but frankly it depends on your potential anxiety level about it, particularly if your incoming flight is delayed at all. Depending the weather in December, that could be an issue for you. Determine what your comfort level is and go with that option.

I haven't checked those specific flights but many AA flights use Terminal 3 and most BA flights use T5 across the airport, only linked by bus or train. You'll want to check that.

Assuming this is a booking all on one ticket it will be fine. Whilst, as Nigel says, most BA flights are from T5, the flights to Vienna are from T3. That’s the terminal that AA uses as well, so no terminal change.

If, however, you are booking this as two separate flights then even 3 hours may well not be enough. And I presume that you would have to get an ETA to enter the UK. That won’t be necessary if it’s one booking as you can stay airside.

I’ve had too many flights to LHR depart late from the U.S., so I always opt for three hour layovers.

Very happy our return flight from Paris to LAX this summer transits through Helsinki rather than Heathrow.
