left out on street

Our B&B host informed us 1 week before our stay we cannot stay due to an illness. How should we handle without panicking! This is a b&b in Rick Steves guidebook.

Did they offer any suggestion/referral of an alternate for you? Did you ask?

I presume you got a refund of any money already paid.

Do not panic, just get busy with booking.com or whatever your favorite search method is for lodging.

Stay calm, but get busy.

Well, you're not on the street just yet. Don't panic - that's not going to help.

Unfortunately, when dealing with a B&B or other small business, there are few (well, fewer) guarantees in case something goes sideways. If it was a big chain hotel, they might have some other options available or at least would try to help find some.

You need to start looking for a new place to stay. Now. You might start with the B&B who has canceled on you - ask them if they can recommend another. But don't count on that, start looking on your own for alternatives. The good news is that there are oodles of places to stay (depends where you're headed, of course - are you off to the ends of the earth, or a major city?). Sure, if you're booking at the last minute your options will be more narrow than they would if you had booked 6 months ahead, but in most places there are other options. Start investigating them now, do the best you can, and don't count on the original B&B to bail you out. It's unfortunate, but it shouldn't wreck your trip - gotta roll with the punches.

I make nearly all of my hotel reservations no more than 4 days in advance. I often have to make some trade-offs between, say, price and location, and I know I'm probably not getting the places with the very highest ratio of value to cost. But I have not had a bad place yet, and I am sometimes quite pleasantly surprised. I use booking.com and read many, many reviews to be sure a previous customer hasn't highlighted an issue that would be a problem for me. For example, I don't need parking, I don't care whether the breakfast coffee is deadful, and I have no need of something like a tea kettle in my room.

As others have said, get on this right away. The longer your planed stay in this city, the trickier it may be to find a suitable, affordable place with availability for as many nights as you need.

Being in any guidebook is irrelevant if the owner is ill!

Where are you staying? It’s far from peak season, so finding an alternative shouldn’t be a problem unless you want to be in Windsor next weekend! Most B & B owners are usually helpful, so start there.

These days, there are plenty of websites to assist. Try sawdays.co.uk, smoothhound.co.uk or google the local tourist board for B & B recommendations. These all cover B & Bs rather than Booking.com which has more coverage of hotels and apartments. Sawdays is more upmarket establishments.

Good luck!

You didn't say where this cancelled B&B is. Don't need the name but if any of us are going to help with an alternate we need the area. England is a big country.

At least they gave you a bit of warning. Better than turning up on the doorstep as has been reported with some Airbnbs.

In addition to the websites Emma listed, now is a good time to look at Hotels dot com and Booking dot com, just to see what's available and at what price. You don't have time to start calling individual places, and realize that many places in a popular guidebook (Rick's or anyone else's) are probably booked already, so be prepared to be flexible.

I also agree that if you have a longer stay (more than a few days), you may have to split your stay into two shorter ones.

Do tell us what city, town, or village this is, so people can give more specific advice.

Absent some unusual circumstances like a special event, the lodging inventory in never zero, so no need to panic. Look on www.booking.com. If budget is an issue and prices have really gone up, then be flexible and look at nearby towns/cities.

Really no need to panic, there hundreds of other places you can stay at. Hop on the internet and start looking. No can help with suggestions since you didn’t say where this is. Like Nigel said, it’s a big country.

When you find something that you would like to book. I suggest that you book directly with the hotel or B&B, it is almost always less than through tripadvisor or hotels.com or .......
Wishing you good luck.

I note that this is the OP's first post, and he/she hasn't offered additional information in 24 hours. It might be wise to wait for the additional data before making the effort to reply again.

doebaltazar, in what city or town is your cancelled B&B?
Impossible for us to suggest specific hotels or B&B's if we don't know what area you will be visiting.

It happens. In peak season, got a call that there had been a fire. Assume that they had received a better offer but learned later that the fire was real. But the call is far better than showing up and being exposed to an illness.
