LCY to Paddington

Those of you who know me, know I never put things off until the last minute, being a definite over-planner, but I realized late last night that we need to get from London City Airport to Paddington Station later today, and I don’t know how.

Taxi? But surely there’s a fairly easy way by public transport? And if we do decide to take a taxi, could you give me a general idea of what it might cost?

We’ll be flying into LCY from Florence early this afternoon, and have hotel and dinner reservations in Bath this evening.

Thanks for your help, and yes, I’ll be better prepared next time.

From Google Maps (the link should take you to your transit options) it looks like you can take the Docklands Light Railway to Poplar, walk 6 minutes (maybe 9) to Canary Wharf and take the Elizabeth Line (towards Reading) to Paddington.

All for £3.00 (tap with your credit card to pay) in 44 minutes.

There's also an option to use DLR and then the Central Line, which involves less walking in the middle and more walking at the end. And 52 minutes overall.

Google Maps estimates the 11.5 to 13 mile drive (on a Friday afternoon) to be 40 minutes to two hours. So, maybe a gazillion pounds?

A possibility to reduce some walking is to take a taxi from LCY to Canary Wharf and the Elizabeth Line from there to Paddington. for £2.80. The 4 mile drive is estimated to take 10-20 minutes.

CW, lol! That’s what Rome2Rio said the taxi would cost. Or thereabouts.

And it couldn't be easier to tap your credit cards (hopefully you and Stan each have one, you can't use the same card for both of you) to pay. Although I think one of you could use the physical card and the other could use the Google/Apple Pay digital version of the card. Haven't tried that, but it makes sense that it should work.

That’s what Rome2Rio said.

It's not like they each make this stuff up :-)

I thought the R2R taxi cost was outrageous, until I saw your estimate.

And thanks for all the suggestions.

Yes, Stan and I have separate debit and credit cards. The last time we were on London, we were able to use our Edward Jones debit cards for transit, which both surprised and pleased me.

I think I would take the DLR to Stratford (possibly having to change at Canning Town- but there are usually plenty of through trains and TfL is showing a normal service today) then Elizabeth Line from Stratford.

This is Stratford , not the next and final stop of Stratford International.

Thanks, Stuart. I was hoping you or Nigel would chime in.

I’ll download a couple of choices; I won’t have cell service in London. If the airport has wifi I can use that, but I’m not going to count on that.

Thanks to both of you for your help.

Thanks again. I just downloaded TfL and am taking some screen shots, just in case.

Why oh why didn’t I do this earlier????

Leaving here in about 15 minutes; all will be well.

Thanks all.

I prefer the Citymapper app to TFL. It gives you more options.

Another option is to take the DLR two stops south to Woolwich. Transfer at Woolwich to the Elizabeth line to Paddington.

BTW, I never rely on Rome2Rio. Too many mistakes

Personally I would rather transfer inside a station if I can. At Woolwich the DLR goes to Woolwich Arsenal station then it is about a 5 minute walk down the street and across a busy road to Woolwich (Elizabeth Line) station- it is a same 'ticket' change as it is what is called an 'out of station' change.

Personally I would rather transfer inside a station if I can ...

Especially today when there are beefy showers about. Even 5 minutes could mean a drenching if unlucky.

Personally I would stick with the pre-Elizabeth line route of DLR to Canning Town, Jubilee to Baker Street, and Bakerloo to Paddington. Changes are relatively easy, the last being cross platform (be at either end of the train).

At the DLR station at LCY, look for the oyster card/contactless reader to tap in. It has been a while since I arrived at LCY, but the last time I was there the card readers were not in an obvious place. I recall that I got all the way to the platform when I realized that I had not tapped in and had to retrace my steps to find the tap in point.

Success! Thank you all. We had to leave before some of you had posted, but we had enough information (and help from a couple of tube and train employees) for everything to work out. We took the DLR from LCY to Stratford, then the Elizabeth line from ther straight to Paddington.

At Paddington I was able to use our "Two Together" card to snag a couple of tickets on the next train to Bath, leaving in only five minutes!

And Laura, we noticed the same thing about tickets at LCY. In fct, we let one train get away while I went back downstairs to try to figure out how to tap in or pay for tickets. The delay was minor, however, and evidently what I tried worked just fine.

Thanks again, everyone.

Oh, and we had a lovely pub dinner in Bath, an amazing steak and ale pie at Victoria Pub and Kitchen.

Sunday we join the RSE Best of England tour!

Jane,

Thanks for coming back to us, and telling us how it went.

That is always really appreciated when someone does that.
