Layover Time at Heathrow Airport

Hi all, haven't flown internationally in quite some time (10+years) so I could use a refresher on how connecting flights work. I'm flying from LAX (Los Angeles) to Munich in June but I have a layover at the Heathrow Airport. The layover is 1 hr 35 mins and requires us to change airlines (from United to Lufthansa, so still under the United family). Is this sufficient time for a connecting flight's layover? I am unfamiliar with Heathrow Airport so I don't know how difficult it is to navigate. Plus, I'm concerned if this requires us to go through customs, claim baggage again, etc.

There's still time to cancel my flight so any feedback is appreciated!

No need to collect baggage (presuming a single through itinerary not two separate tickets) nor pass immigration but you will go through security. This is a same terminal transfer so the time is fine unless the incoming flight is badly delayed.

Whoever rolls out the first AI tool that can assimilate all the variables and data points to provide a probability range of connection success should get a Nobel prize. Until then, if you are on one United ticket, they think you can make it and if you don't , they own getting you there. Of course, that's little solace if your travel companion is yelling and grumpy because they told you so. If you take it, try and get seats toward the exit as you don't want to be 15-20 minutes exiting the plane. We personally don't opt for connections internationally with less than two hours if we can help it, but it all depends on alternatives. In your case, I'm guessing you are arriving LHR around noonish. I think you'll find three or 4 later flights on Lufthansa from LHR to Munich so if you do miss your primary, I would think you could make a later flight assuming availability.

You have some decent United alternatives from LAX thru Denver and Chicago and could do your connecting state side? I'm sure you have looked at those.. Good luck

Link to the connections page of the Heathrow site. Assuming the arriving flight is on time, I assume an hour for a same terminal connecting flight and 1.5 hours if you need to change terminals.

My wife and I prefer longer layovers in case a flight is delayed.

Use the connections page linked above, put in your flight information, and it will give you step by step instructions on what to do.

Fortunately, United and Lufthansa are in the same terminal so that will make things easier.

Do not follow the crowd to immigration. Follow the "Flight Connections" signs and assuming your United flight is on time, you should be fine. When you say goodbye to your baggage at LAX, you won't see it again until Munich.

Hello all! Thank you for your replies. Here are the specifics: We will leave LAX at 1 PM on Friday, arriving on Saturday morning at Heathrow at 7:25 AM on United Airlines. We will catch the second leg of the flight at 9:00, arriving in Munich at 11:50, with the flight being operated by Lufthansa. In chatting with the agent online, we won't need to collect our luggages until our final destination. If you're familiar with Heathrow, do you think we'll have enough time to catch that second flight? I understand there are other factors such as flight delays and how long it takes for us to deplane. The online agent says minimum connection is 1 hour. But, what do you think we should do? Pay for insurance in case we miss the connection? At this point, the prices have increased by as much as $500/ticket. Thanks again!

You should be fine. Both airlines are in T2. You only need to deplane and follow Flight Connections to security, and then into the general area to await a gate posting if not already up. Don't dawdle, and you will likely find you have a few minutes to burn for a coffee or the loo.You are staying airside, you are not entering the UK, Flight Connections and not Immigration. Note that you want your first connection after the flight across and not stateside , if there is a problem there will be later flights that the airline can put you on -if the problem is in the US there likely may not be any other flight that day.

If this is on one ticket, even if you miss your connection, the airline must get you on the next available flight.

You should be fine.
