Late arrival on Banking Holiday

We are traveling from the U.S. to Heathrow, arriving at 2245 on Aug. 24. I assume that it will take at least an hour to get through immigration and pick up luggage. It is our first trip to London and we are not adept at public transport, though willing to try. Are all forms of transport--train, tube, bus functional at this time? Should we take a taxi or transport service instead? We plan to stay in the central city area and do not have a reservation yet. Also, will most museums, restaurants, etc. be open on the Banking Holiday, Aug. 25?

We just did a flight that landed in that time frame and your estimate for being ready to exit is about what we experienced. The last Heathrow Express picks up at Terminal 3 at 23:48. The tube normally runs until 24:30ish. You might want to check into a car service - several are mentioned on the forum. We learned the hard way that they tend to do maintanence work on Sunday on the tube. I'm not sure how far you will be traveling on that day, but it can be tiring that late at night. if you opt for the tube, check the " tfl" website for service info. If you do the Heathrow Express ( maybe with a taxi), they have a special round- trip online only fare (look under deals on their website).

I think everything but banks and the post office are open on bank holidays.

You can check bank holiday opening hours for museums, galleries and other attractions by Googling them on Line. Some restaurants may be closed but pubs will certainly be open. Be aware that some public transportation will be working a holiday or Sunday schedule. Again a check online at http://www.visitlondon.com/traveller-information/essential-information/public-holidays?ref=mosaic will give you the information you need (and may answer some of your other questions).

The type of business that may be closed on the August Bank Holiday is the small family run one.

London has an extensive night bus network, which includes Heathrow, should your arrival be a bit late, but this is in my opinion only convenient if you are staying close to the N9 route needing no changes. There are 3 an hour from terminal 5 and central areas - as usual terminal 4 is the ugly stepchild.

Think of a Banking Holiday like President's Day in the states. With few exceptions all the "sites" will be open. To play it safe (flight could be delayed, etc) and at that time of night, I'd opt for a cab or car service. Save learning the ropes of London's fabulous public transport options once you've settled. Also, you need to consider booking your accommodations now. You will benefit greatly from grabbing a copy to the RS London Guidebook. Invaluable for first timers. Great city! Have a wonderful time!
