Last minute theatre tickets

I'm wondering if Phantom of the Opera has played long enough that last minute tickets might be available or if we would definitely need advance reservations?

There are a few seats available for performances this week. However, many are avoiding crowded places such as theatres and when these people become more comfortable with attending, the limited supply of tickets will soon evaporate. London theatres have been badly affected by Covid amongst the cast and many performances have been cancelled.

When are you visiting?

You can monitor the ticket situation for an individual play by going through the ticket-purchase process online but stopping short of actually buying. When I go to London it is for at least ten days. It's my impression that with that much lead time, tickets are available for most plays (though not necessarily for really good seats), but if I dilly-dally and wait until a day or two before I want to attend a play, it may well be sold out. I don't know whether Phantom is currently sold out for weeks or months at a time, but that should be easy to determine from the website.

There is no guarantee that tickets to every play are available at the TKTS booth. I’ve been there before they open and stood in line. Once you get to the front you can see what’s available. If you absolutely must see a particular play you should buy tickets in advance.

Thanks to all. I've used the ticket booth before D know there are no guarantees, but I knew that the most in demand tickets usually weren't available. Your suggestion about checking before we go is a great idea.

We will be going in the middle of June, so who knows what Covid will bring then.

Even for really popular plays, tickets sometimes become available just one or a few days prior to the performance. It probably takes some luck and diligence (checking the official ticket website frequently) to snag those tickets. You might find information about how sales of returned tickets are handled for specific shows on the TheatreMonkey website.

We will be in London in May, going to the theatre three times, we have our tickets for all three shows. We like getting tickets in the stalls for better seats.

Before the pandemic, http://www.theatremonkey.com/ was a standby for London theatres. It seems to be active now and with a streamlined website. It offers advice on good seats in particular theatres, suggests discount promotions, contains a massive list of ticket agencies, and includes some customer-generated reviews. http://www.theatremonkey.com/

And I speak strictly as a satisfied customer with no other connection.
