Lake District Car Rental Kendal v. Penrith

Does anyone know why the Enterprise car rental in Penrith is so much more expensive ~ 4 times (!!) for same car as in Kendal? Curious if anyone else has come across this.

Penrith is more convenient for us as a pick up, but for that cost we will drive the extra half hour.

Also, appreciate suggestions for how best (and least expensively) to get from the train station in Oxenholme to the Enterprise rental office in Kendal. Enterprise does not seem to offer their pick up service at the Kendal location.

Thanks!

  • the difference may be due to dates. I have just shopped for a Compact Manual (Ford Focus or similar) manual/stick shift for 10 to 15 February- Kendal, Penrith and my local branch in West Cumbria (which I can walk to in fifteen minutes) all come out at the same price of £247.80.

If you contact them they should pick you up at Oxenholme- others here have done that with success.

Otherwise the best route is by taxi from outside the London bound platform, the cheapest is on the bus every half hour #41 or 41A from outside the station. That changes number to 43 or 43A at Kendal Bus Station (but stay on) and stops right outside (£4.50 each). Oddly the pretty infrequent #106 from Penrith also stops right outside.

It's less than 3 miles so it shouldn't be more than £10 for the taxi. If there isn't a taxi waiting there is a list of numbers to call at the taxi rank and I'm pretty sure there is also a rate card there for such standard journeys as this. The on duty company varies by time of day and day of week- yes Kendal is that type of town.
