Lake District and Yorkshire Dales Itinerary

We will be in London in October and plan to visit the Lake District, especially Dove Cottage and the Yorkshire Dales, home of the setting for "All Creatures Great and Small". We plan to stay two or three nights in each location.

I'm looking for lodging recommendations. Our budget is up to $350 per night. We will not be renting a car so towns need to be accessible by public transport.

Thank you for your suggestions!

While there are quite a few other hotels in Grasmere the obvious choice is the Daffodil Hotel and Spa- opposite Dove Cottage.

For £290/$USD350 you can have the best room in the hotel, and still have change to spare.

The bus (555 hourly and 599 Open Top 3 x an hour) from Windermere Railway Station stops straight outside the hotel.

From there (bus via Ambleside) you can get to Hawkshead Old Grammar School, and (bus via Keswick) to Wordsworth House, Cockermouth (his birthplace).
Rydal Mount is a very short bus ride (or even walk) from the Daffodil

The Yorkshire Dales- The original TV series and the movie was filmed in Wensleydale and surrounding Dales.

The new TV series was filmed around Grassington. You get there via train to Skipton then local bus. This is a very healthy budget for anywhere in the Dales.

With a good budget and assuming you mean Grassington, why not the Devonshire (aka The Drovers Arms). You can only spend about half that budget there.

From Grasmere I would either take the 555/554 bus north to Carlisle for the Settle/Carlisle line to Skipton, or the 555/599 back to Windermere, train to Lancaster, change for the train to Skipton.

The two routes are six of one, half a dozen of the other.

Then afterwards train Skipton to Leeds, Leeds to London Kings Cross.
