Kirkstone Pass re-opens

The Kirkstone Pass in the Lake District re-opens to traffic next Friday, 17 July 2026, after the major repair work following last year's landslip.

Note that due to the short notice Kendal Depot do not have the resources to run their part of the bus services over the pass, thus it is expected that the 508 bus Penrith to Patterdale to Windermere will run to an amended and reduced schedule from 20 July to that advertised.

EDIT (24 July)- Resources have now been found to operate the full advertised bus timetable

In May, we had rode our tandem bike from Windemere up "The Struggle" as the "easier" rode was closed for the repair work! Good to hear it's reopening. Even though the steeper route was a "struggle" we loved it. It's a beautiful Pass!

Congratualtions to all of those who have managed to get the route repaired and reopened so quickly.

The Kirkstone Pass Inn closed permanently in mid August 2026 with immediate effect, having had a very brief life.

Trade had collapsed, because the landlord has introduced charges to the car park opposite after the National Park handed back the lease following a breakdown in negotiations with the landlord.

Of course many see this as premeditated action. The pub had only been retained in a part of the premises after local protests. All along the landlord had wanted to make the whole building into Air B n B style holiday lets.
