Kings X to Stratford

I'm arriving in London Kings Cross on Wednesday about 2pm and need to get to Stratford (For Abba the next day).
I was told there was a direct train but I'm trying to book now and it says One Change. Do we really have to change? I find the underground confusing at the best of times, and we'll have a heavy suitcase.
Can anyone suggest the best way to get to Stratford from Kings Cross with a big suitcase? I have very rarely used public transport in London. We used taxis on our last (3 day) stay and it cost hundreds.
Money isn't a huge issue but I'm guessing a taxi would be £80 - £90 one way, which is too much.
Many Thanks.

It's a bit under 7 miles so the taxi fare should be more like £33 to £45.

There is no direct train.

There are at least 5 ways to make this journey. I think the easiest is either Hammersmith & City or Metropolitan Line or Circle Line (all leave from the same platform, just take the first train) to Liverpool Street then main line train (it's the fastest route) OR Hammersmith and City Line to West Ham, change to the DLR (Docklands Light Railway).
The H and C train will be destination 'Barking'.
West Ham is a fully accessible station- lifts/elevators to all platforms

Another way to do the journey is Bus #205 to Whitechapel Station changing onto the #25 to Stratford Bus Station (outside the Railway Station). A lot slower but you get to see the streets of East London.

Thanks for that. Plenty of food for thought, especially the bus idea. We often use the Hop On Hop Off busses in cities, so a bus is a good way to see things.

There are direct trains from St Pancras International to Stratford International, 7 minute journey £4 fare..

there are absolutely direct trains. Cross the street to St Pancras Station, go immediately upstairs to the Southeastern Javelin platforms. Any train, first stop. Stratford. (not Stratford upon Avon)

Where are you actually staying? That will dictate which route is best for you. The route to Stratford International will be the quickest although it’s bit more expensive and the trains are as frequent. But it’s perfect if you’re staying at the Stratford Hotel and one or two others. But not great if you’re staying near Stratford High St, as it’s on the wrong side of the Westfield and Stratford shopping centres. For that area you need the main Stratford station.

For the latter another route will be Thameslink from St Pancras to Farringdon and then Elizabeth line to Stratford. A bit to walk to St Pancras but then step free.

Once in Stratford, just know the ABBA venue is easily reached by using Pudding Mill Lane Station on the DLR ( Docklands Light Railway). It is a 1 minute walk to the venue from there. I am pretty sure it is a long way to walk to the venue from Stratford, so just catch the DLR from Stratford station (Just use your CC to tap in and out on the DLR).

Enjoy the show! we went back in March.

The Javelin goes to Stratford International station, not to Stratford (main line)- where all the various main line, tube and DLR routes serve, and is right in the town centre, and which has the bus station right outside.

A very important distinction.

Depending on where you are staying it is then either a bus, walk or DLR connection into Stratford, in the town centre.

I know both these stations fairly well as I have stayed near Stratford a few times. It is about a five minute walk between Stratford and Stratford International. The shortcut walk is to go through the inside of the mall.

Most hotels are either next to the Mall or across the pedestrian bridge from the mall.

It really depends on where the OP is staying but no hotel near Stratford is far from either station.

You're a bit optimistic there Frank. The Ibis, Travelodge and Holiday Inn, all on the High Street, are a mile or a 20 minutes walk from the International station and much nearer the main Stratford station. That's a long way dragging bags. The latter two are also very close to the ABBA Arena so may well be the destination.

As I said above there are also hotels much nearer the International station. The Stratford is my favourite. Although I haven't actually stayed there as my son lives close by I've eaten there and have very positive comments from friends who we have sent there.

That's why I said to walk through the mall. Maps show walking around the mall but walking through it will save a bit.

And if they are worried about lugging bags, getting off at Stratford International is just a short cab ride to the furthest hotel.

The other option is Uber from Kings Cross to their hotel near Stratford. Or, train to Stratford International and then Uber to their hotel.

Which hotel is the key.

Frank - this is getting a bit esoteric but my post above was based on looking at google maps to check and they showed routes through Westfield (except for the Holiday Inn where walking round the mall is quicker). It's definitely nowhere near a 5 minute walk to any of those 3 hotels. There are others in between as well though.

Anyway, if the hotel is not near Stratford International I don't think I would go that way, as you already have to walk from King's Cross to St Pancras and there are typically only 3 trains an hour. If you then need a walk or cab ride as well it must be easier to go to Stratford station.

Also fares from St Pancras to Stratford International (although they can be paid by Oyster or contactless) are more expensive than the TfL equivalent for the zones travelled- at £4.90 Off Peak (or £8.10 Peak). That is a point to point fare. You then pay another fare if you connect onto the DLR- unlike the tube or overground where it counts as a through fare.

Well, we have booked St Pancras Int to Stratford Int £21.40 return. (for a 7 min journey) with no changes. So this is convenient, not as costly as a cab, but we need to get to the Travelodge on the High Street. Looking at google maps, it looks doable (the missus can't walk far) at less than 10 mins (although I'm a bit worried about some of the comments - she can't walk a mile).
It looks like you can leave the station on both sides of the tracks. So we'd hopefully find ourselves walking along Jupp Road and getting to Travelodge in 10 mins.

Just looked at Maps, and there appears to be three stations! I was looking at the wrong one. Stratford International is much further than I realised. Hopefully there will be taxis on wednesday afternoon.

What's done is done. The closest station would actually have been Stratford High Street on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR). so the via West Ham route given originally would have been much the easiest and way cheaper (at £2.80 each) with no need for a taxi. International is not the right station- even Stratford (Main Line) would have been the closer.
Bus 108 takes you from the International Station to just round the corner on Carpenters Road, or a stop just down the High Street, which I think is a little bit closer, every 8 to 11 minutes. It runs 24 hours a day (half hourly overnight).

It goes through the Blackwall tunnel to Lewisham.

It looks like you have well overpaid for those train tickets but at least the journey is quick. You could have paid via a contactless card for £4.90 off peak. Bear in mind that there are only 3 trains an hour for most of the day.

It's a 1 mile walk but you don't need a taxi though. Just head north from the station to Stratford International DLR station. From there it's two stops to Stratford High St DLR, just across the road from the hotel. You will have to pay extra for that ride, which you wouldn't have had to if you had gone to Stratford station.
