Kids Under 11 free on London trains

I understand that kids under 11 travel for free on tube, busses etc. Are there attendants at all tube stations to allow them thru the gate? Is it inconvenient? Considering buying an Oyster card for my 10 yr old when we visit just so we can get in and out of station quickly.

There is an attended gate, most often the wide gate if there is one. Use this one anyway so you go through together.

Free travel is not available on most National Rail services, children must be accompanied on the Underground and there is a max of 4.

As Marco says, that is not the case for most children on most mainline trains
