Keswick to Edinburgh- what to do on travel day?

Hello all,

I have a trip coming up next week and would love to maximize my time, and have been unsuccessful in finding something to fill my day with. I’ll be spending 3-4 days in Edinburgh, 3 days in Oban, and 3 days in the Lakes. I have an extra day after my time in the Lakes, and have planned to just return to Edinburgh as my flight home will depart the following day (after my extra day). Having already spent 3-4 days in Edinburgh, I would rather fill that day with something other than Edinburgh. Any recommendations on sites to see or places to stay between Keswick and Edinburgh? I have hired a car, so I can go anywhere. Thanks in advance.

Yes, go to Northumberland!!! It's beautiful, scenic and blessedly uncrowded. You can see gorgeous sites like Bamburgh Castle, or go to Holy Island (Lindisfarne), which is an incredible experience. Or take a boat out to the Farne Islands to see puffins and other sea birds and wildlife.

Or you could just take a drive through the incredibly beautiful Northumberland National Park.

Or head to some of the Hadrian's Wall sites, like Housesteads or Vindolanda. So many choices!

I would suggest either going up the M74 to Moffat then going over the Grey Mare's Tail (road pass and spectacular waterfall) to Selkirk then working up through the Scottish Borders.

OR-

Turn off the M6 at Junction 44, then the A7/B6357 via Gilnockie Towerthen through Newcastleton (a village built for those displaced by the Clearances) and on to Hermitage Castle.

You are now deep into Reivers Land now.

Then continue on to Hawick. Then either Traquair House, or Abbotsford and Melrose Abbey.

More than enough here for one day.

If you like woolen mills, if you do pass through Selkirk there’s Lochcarron of Scotland. It offers tours of the mill. In the borders area, in addition to Melrose abbey there are also Kelso, Jedburgh, and Dryburgh Abbeys. Closer in towards Edinburgh is Rosslyn Chapel. If you have an interest in print shops, Robert Smail's Printing Works in Innerleithen gave a nice tour.
