Keswick—or nearby—B&B recommendation

Good morning! Contemplating a return to the Lake District after almost 20 years and bringing along our almost-20 year old son. Planning for late May/early June. Suggestions for a good B&B in Keswick (or open to other towns as well)? Loved Parkfield Guest House, but it seems not to be open anymore. We need a family room or a double/single combo. Not even mentioning the unmentionable. Hoping summer will be better for all. Thanks in advance!

I wanted to recommend Howe Keld but it has been sold and closed. The new owners are converting them into holiday apartments.

Most B&Bs will offer single or double rooms, not family rooms and a 19 year old would not be expected to share with his parents! Maybe a cottage would suit?

I don’t stay in the Keswick area when I visit there, as I prefer the western lakes such as Eskdale and I always rent a cottage, however The Mount in Keswick is good.

We also stayed at Parkfield house and it is showing as permanently closed. Consider looking at the others on the same road; Lane Rigg, West View, or Lakeside House.

jaimeelsabio, thanks for the names! I will look at them, too.
Jennifer, could you tell me more about the cottage possibility? Do you rent directly from the owners or go through a booking agency (I noticed a group called Sykes, I think)? I’ve not been west of Coniston. Why do you prefer the western lakes, if you don’t mind the question?
Frank, I noticed the Howe Keld closure as well; sorry for that.
So sad that John and Susan closed Parkfield—they were such lovely hosts!

Hi Debbie -

For cottages in Keswick try visiting cumbrian-cottages.co.uk - they have offices in Keswick and a large local selection. Stayed at a couple of them myself before now. But book soon - COVID may well be on the run by the time you visit, but many Brits may still choose to ‘staycation’ rather than risk venturing abroad, plus the Lake District is always very busy all year round and demand is never less than high. Be also warned that parking in central Keswick is a continuing nightmare, so a cottage with own parking (assuming you are driving) is a pre-requisite.

If you are not dead set on staying centrally in Keswick then Portinscale, Grange, and Braithwaite are nearby alternatives.

Hope you get fixed up somewhere!

Ian

Not a B&B, but it's an excellent family owned and run hotel: Crow Park Hotel, Keswick:
https://www.crowpark.co.uk/
We stayed here in 2018.
Lovely hotel, homey bedrooms, comfy beds, modern bathrooms, spotlessly clean, good breakfast, friendly hosts.
Short walk to town center, shops, restaurants, and to the lake.

In Keswick,
don't miss the Theatre By The Lake.
Plays and good food in the dining room in warm weather/summer.
Nice outdoor stone terrace for drinks or dining with views of the lake.

In 2018 we stayed 3 nights at Burleigh Mead B&B. It was fabulous. We were in the Burleigh Suite which is a spacious room on ground floor with lake view. Might work well for your party of 3. https://burleighmead.co.uk

My RS England tour stayed at Crow Park in Keswick. It was one of my favorite hotels. The location in town, the views from my room, and my cozy room were the best. I would recommend. I liked that we took such wonderful walks from there, even hopped on the lake boat for a great circular walk back to the hotel. We did get a great breakfast too.

We stayed 3 nights at Burleigh Mead B&B in October 2021 and highly recommend it. During the pandemic, the owners renovated the B&B, so the accommodations were spectacular. The full English breakfast was also delicious.

@Nigel—thank you! Would not have thought about National Trust options; excellent suggestion.
@ianandjulie—lots of good choices in Cumbrian Cottages, and thanks for the “book early” advice. We are so hopeful, no, DETERMINED, to be among the vacationing-in-England folks. Thank you for the suggestions and the well wishes!
@Rebecca and @Terril—Crow Park definitely looks like a possibility. The reviews on Trip Advisor are a fun read—the pointed retorts of the landlord to his negative reviews…gotta hand it to a guy who defends his business! Obviously you are both among the positives. Also appreciate the Theatre suggestion!
@Simpgolf and Kennedjl—Burleigh Mead looks great; thank you both for the suggestion.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Although it's a distance from town, we loved our 2019 stay in the Newlands Valley at Ellas Crag. Spectacular views and great accommodations.
