Jubilee travel planning London ‘22

In June, I thought I rather foolishly purchased airfare to London too early and now I’m doing little happy dances every now and then! It will be our first overseas trip with our boys, ages 11 and 8. Also different this time, is planning around a rather large event TO attend - the Jubilee celebrations. I’m looking for input from those that may have attended events like this before because this is not my usual mode of operation...so I want to prepare and also prepare the kids.

The main event I’m planning around is Trooping the Colour and I’m having a hard time envisioning what the day will look like once that is done. I imagine the energy in the city will be quite hyped.

Thanks in advance...it’s been almost 12 years since I’ve posted on this forum and we are ready to tackle traveling with the kids in tow again!

I have been to several Trooping of the Color events in London over the Years. This is how is generally works. People will line the route which goes from Buckingham Palace along The Mall to Horse Guards Parade, and back again. The ticketed section in Horse Guards Parade takes about 1 hour before the royals and the escorts all return to Palace. Tickets are very hard to get to see the ceremony in Horse Guards, but you don't need to have a ticket to see the royal procession. Just try to get to the Mall earlier enough to get a spot. Usually the crowds are 3-6 deep but this year maybe different as its a special jubilee. I would try to get their about 7:30 in the morning and stand towards the end where Bucking Palace is. You will then get to see the Royals come out on the balcony and you will have the Palace for the backdrop for photos. There will be a fly over the Palace. An extended bank holiday, from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June has been given, so many more people will be off from work and schools will be out that week. Expect prices to be up and London to be busy. This year trooping of the color is going to be held on June 2 (Thursday) and not the first Saturday of June. There will also be a BBC live concert which can be watched on big screens around London. Grab a picnic and head to a park to enjoy the fun. it is usually quite organized and everyone is in a festive spirit. You will have a great time.

Yes, I found a VRBO in Kensington Olympia around the same time I booked our airfare and jumped to secure spots and pricing. And then that was it :) Unlike prior travels, I did buy extra protections in case we had to cancel or change last minute barring vaccine status for the kids and quarantine but they have their first shot down so I think we will be ok! (Fingers crossed! But at least I have that assurance)

Thanks so much for the information! I will be sure to reference this when planning that day and for the concert that is being planned...we were considering a day trip here so that is helpful for the itinerary. Many thanks :)

I hope you are aware that Kensington Olympia is not a regular stop tube station. There are some overground train services from there as well as buses.

You could take the overground service one stop in either direction ( Shepherds Bush or West Brompton) to connect to the tube or get familiar with the buses.

The closest tube station is probably Barons Court about a 15 minute walk.

Previous jubilee celebrations have included many local street parties, which would give you a different perspective.

For a decent view of any royal parade, many will be camping out overnight.

I doubt the “energy will be hyped” as most will be making the most of the long weekend and heading away. The media will be hyped, which is different!

An event that you can attend and get really close is The Order of the Garter at Windsor Castle, we went one year it was fabulous. We were a foot away from all the Royals as they walked passed. You have to request tickets, but they are easy to get.

We will be on the RS Best of London Tour during the time of the Jubilee celebrations. Our tour ends 4 June. Does anyone have any input as to how the celebrations will impact our tour?

Yes! as a British ex-pat I feel I have sinned with my Americanized spelling. It is most definitely Trooping of the Colour. My American spell check does not like it.

We will be there during that weekend too and hope to experience some of the excitement.

My son who lives in London is leaving for Spain, but he sent me this https://www.hrp.org.uk/tower-of-london/whats-on/superbloom-at-the-tower-of-london/#gs.xwqdnz about something special at Tower of London, and I also found this about a jousting event at Hampton Court Palace that weekend https://www.hrp.org.uk/hampton-court-palace/whats-on/jubilee-joust/#gs.ze29h1.

Maybe that would interest the kids.
