From today's NY Times , a thought provoking piece of Medieval History - https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/10/travel/medieval-jewish-england.html?unlocked_article_code=qgQYntZNscEbW1Pq5NZF3D-r5WBlanTxC-GBCndp96-TNos1839YCxQuxYkGjFHuC3VldtIr5QsK8ZJ3cSoE2FGw08XbtsCscVoIt0uUKjMBbOZzJ5DIf5OaFBt3c3nt2cuUVFeO6kMGMZQmAeJKS4rDXc4M7pCKmaZgZ_loBDaINaPzgdYDOkRjim-t3XqNzg6CF3R1Fdsmed0QKXkvpe4bdo458-vjYTwbZh9v0IdTrMxhznNbxu7rq4BWuBXS8je03eooK_gJ7ZksLt3C-F_qNf5Zw_v_c21jOAJeumXBq9ToRxsHrQ1QicJeqnl5IoJpSM-_bUsHrPw4ooG9xw&smid=url-share
Thank you so much for sharing this. Very interesting.
Was at the Jewish History in York, and I still have a bitter taste in my mouth from it.
Author notes this:
“In the first 30, 40 years of the 13th century, the community is, if
anything, wealthier and stronger than it was up to 1190,” John Oxley,
York’s city archaeologist, told me.
1190 was when they were all murdered or driven to suicide in Clifford's Tower... every last one. It was over debt, as the Jews of England were not allowed to own land.
No one talks about what happened to the second wave of Jews in York, those prosperous, wealthy stronger folks... some killed, with approval from the crown, some just moved out, disappeared to history. Apparently to Scotland with some of them, maybe some to France or Spain. Or maybe just to unmarked graves in England.
England has made some steps to acknowledge it's unpleasant history with Jewish people, but it's early days yet, and it's not without its growing pains.
Thank you Steven for the gift of the article. I found it very interesting.
Thanks , everyone , I'm glad to see your responses , Steve
