Itinerary Review-Mother and Child trip

Finishing up my final plan for our trip. I want to do fun things but we will be relying on trains and buses for transport-so plans need to not be too far off the beaten path. I am still wondering about activities in Windermere and might book some half day tours there. I am looking for ideas that a 5 yr old would enjoy--she loves pretty gardens and whimsical things like fairies, mermaids, and fancy tea parties. Are there any activities that I could add--particularly in Windermere. I don't want to do too much and think I have built in enough downtime. Any suggestions or great ideas welcome. This is our first big trip abroad and I am excited...but a little nervous.

Hope you're aware that there are no direct trains from Heathrow to Bath - you need to either take the train into London and out again, or get a bus to Reading and a train from there.

By the time you've travelled from Winchcombe to Windermere you might not have time, or want, to visit any attractions the same day, especially with a five-year-old.

Again, especially with a five year old, I would plan to stay in London the night before your departure from Heathrow, to avoid any problems with transport delays.

I don't know about the Beatrix Potter Experience - never been - but I can speak enthusiastically and with confidence about Hill Top which is on the west side of Lake Windermere. It is the home of Beatrix Potter, many of the features of the house and garden and village are reflected in the drawings and illustrations of the stories, her own rabbits at Hill Top were the characters in the stories, and the furnishings in the house were hers and have been left as they were. Copies of the books are scattered about the house so you can read to her in the exact location. It is timed entry but no limit once inside. Wait until you see the garden and the village.

You don't need a car to get there. Boats from all over the lake call at Bo'ness (so do the buses from Windermere and all points) where you can take a small ferry across, or the walkers boat, or the islands boat, to Ferry House where the Mountain Goat minibus meets the boat for the little ride up the hill to Hill Top.

You and she will love it.....

Thank you-this is all really helpful. This is our first big trip so I welcome the advice. I do hope we can get to Hill Top--it sounds perfect!
