Itinerary Help for November Trip

Hello everyone,

I won't mistakenly title my trip History Tour, since I was soundly spanked for that mistake a few weeks ago.

I am traveling with my adult son and we have 17 days on the ground. We plan to spend time in York, London, then someplace to tour south/southeast of London. Tentatively, we are going to take the train to York on day one, and spend three nights, visiting Hadrian's Wall on a tour, then two days in and around York.

Ideally I would like to circle around for the rest of our "out of London" stuff, then end up back in London for eight or so days, but it seems most trains go in and out of London and it would be a LONG day or evening to travel from York to someplace south of London.

I'm now thinking we should take the train back to London for our time there, then find another location for our last five or so days. Any thoughts on a base we could use to visit Portsmouth, Oxford, Stonehenge and would have a fairly straightforward connection to LHR on our final day (3 p.m. departure)?

Thanks for your time. I know I'll be back with more questions.

Linda

The fastest train from York to London Kings Cross is 1hr 52 minutes. Perhaps 30 minutes to Waterloo and then 1.5 hours to Portsmouth, as an example.

You don't have to route via London for the South Coast. There is an hourly York to Reading train via Birmingham. Change at Reading for Winchester and Southampton.
Or for Salisbury train from Reading to Basingstoke then change again. Both those trains are every 30 minutes.
From Portsmouth or Salisbury (for Stonehenge) take the train to Woking for the Rail Air bus to Heathrow.
From Salisbury you can also change at Basingstoke for the Rail Air Bus #730/731.
Oxford is only 90 minutes or so by train from Salisbury via Basingstoke and Reading.
There is an hourly train from Salisbury to Portsmouth - 80 minute journey time.
