We’re planning some days next May /June in Cornwall, and we’re wondering if Scilly is worth a visit. We’ve read it can be done in a day, ferry one-way,, fly back. Is it worth an overnight visit? Thank you!
Sicily is worth much more than one day. One day would be a waste of time. You really need about 2 weeks.
The OP is referring to Scilly in the UK, not Sicily in Italy. I’ve never been there so can’t answer the question. The closest I got was Lands End.
I have not been to Scilly but from everything I've read (both in books and online), one day is doable but you need at least 5-7 days to really enjoy it. Certainly 2 weeks would be ideal.
ETA: Here is a post that may answer some of your questions about Scilly (and ironically someone there also confused it with Sicily). https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/england/cornwall-and-isle-of-scilly-early-planning-stages
You can easily get a snapshot of the Scillies in a day trip, probably flying both ways if you can to maximise your time. Of course longer would be better but some time is better than none.
This video was just published this morning and made me think of this thread.
A new vessel is being procured- from a French yard. But Cammell Laird in Birkenhead are threatening to build their own vessel (miffed at having lost out in the tendering process) and start a competing service.
Developments are awaited.
I always look forward to Steve Marsh's videos on a Saturday morning.
I like Steve Marsh's videos too. He covers quite a lot of Scottish trips that you wouldn't normally see on Youtube. I particularly enjoyed his video walking the Angus coastline recently, somewhere I knew next to nothing about.
By the way in season (March to October) the Isles of Scilly Skybus also flies from Exeter and Newquay, so you don't have to start from Penzance.
I have the kind of mindset who would willingly relocate from Newquay or Exeter to Penzance via the Isles of Scilly!
You can connect at Newquay Airport into Skybus with flights on other carriers from London (Stansted and Gatwick), Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Newcastle, East Midlands Dublin and Belfast City.
Exeter also has flights from Dubljn, Belfast City, Newcastle, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Jersey and Guernsey.
So the Isles are far better connected than you might imagine.
Try to spend at least 3 days so you can explore the place to your satisfaction.
I love Steve Marsh's videos! I watched several of them before my trip to Scotland and they really helped me. I didn't even think about checking them for England places, but duh! I will head on over. 😊
This is information about Harland and Woolf's proposed new ferries for the Isles of Scilly route- https://www.msn.com/en-gb/travel/news/cornwall-and-isles-of-scilly-fast-ferry-service-proposed-by-harland-and-wolff/ar-AA1hUXxb?ocid=msedgntp&cvid=2953e120f5f448e0adae229ee958d69c&ei=10
