I'll be in London for a week in September and wondered if Hampton Court is worth it for a visit. Love royal history!
If you love Royal History then it is definitely worth it.
Hampton Court is one of the sites most suggested and/or recommended for a visit. Lots of history. (understatement....)
Consider also Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace if you are there when it is open to the public.
Continuing with my prejudices - skip Kensington Palace
Any other key things to see besides Tower?
Westminster Abbey, for sure. Lots of king, queens and queen consorts buried there, and it has a long history as the Coronation church since 1066. If you're really into royalty stuff then you might enjoy Kensington Palace but I wasn't wild about that one.
I flip flop back and forth whether my favourite site in London was the Tower or Hampton. Hampton is definitely worth it if you like royal history.
Definitely but really be sure to go on a nice day to enjoy the grounds. Also.don't miss St. Paul's.
YES.
I finally made it to Hampton Court on my 4th visit to London--very easy 3/4 day trip by train, loved exploring the castle and grounds, especially the gardens, and had hoped to catch the Royal School of Needlework open but was not lucky with that. Windsor is another excellent day trip, visited twice now, and while I enjoyed Buckingham Palace, once was enough--same with Kensington, though I liked being in the room that Queen Victoria was born in and there was an excellent special display of things that belonged to her.
Only you can be the judge of that. My wife liked it more than I did, but it is a top attraction.
Tours at Hampton Court are well worthwhile. Even if you don’t get in on one of their tours, be sure to stop in at Fish Lane (ask somebody), and learn the history about the wine fountain. The fountain mock-up that’s in the inner courtyard wasn’t originally part of the palace, but its history is really fascinating, and they recreated this one in just the last few years. The tapestries in the great hall are original and detailed, but after 400 years their silver threads have disappeared. Still impressive.
The kitchen is really interesting, and if you’re there on a weekend when somebody is roasting meat as a demonstration of Tudor meal preparations, use the chance to chat with the cook, but don’t stand in front of the massive oven spits too long, or you’ll turn out medium rare, too!
Another Royal History sight to include is the King’s Gallery (for which the stone entryway still said “Queen’s Gallery” a year ago, as they had t yet carved out a new granite slab sign for it, after Elizabeth II’s passing), on the south end of Buckingham Palace. Its rotating exhibits are all a small bit of the Royals’ huge personal art collection, with a historical context, and really fine art.
Absolutely ! I went last year and loved it. I’m really into British history, so if you are too you should enjoy it. I recommend using the free audio guide.
100% Yes.
Yes!
I did an audio guided tour of Hampton Court Palace. It was a gorgeous day, and I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the royal history. It was pretty convenient for me to get to, as my hotel was in Kingston, about a 10 minutes bus ride away. HCP wasn't too crowded, so the gardens, palace, and small chapel were pretty peaceful. I would definitely recommend.
Buckingham Palace will be open for tours when you are there (through September 28. Here's the website: https://www.rct.uk/visit/buckingham-palace
I went a couple years ago and loved it. The gift shop is also amazing. I've also been to Hampton Court and to WIndsor and enjoyed both of those.
My wife and I did it as a day-trip from London two weeks ago and it was fantastic! Well worth a visit. We got memberships which covered both Tower of London and Hampton Court and gave us discounts at the shops and food service.
It is absolutely worth a visit! My husband and I went when we were on our honeymoon in 2004. Took the train from London, it was easy. If you love royal history, Hampton Court Palace is the place for you!
Is Hampton Court a full day visit or half day? I was thinking it was a full day with the train to it and back if you include the gardens?
We planned on Hampton Court Palace for several hours and then planned to see the Royal Botanical Gardens (“Kew Gardens”) during the afternoon.
Even though I had been to Hampton Court on a prior trip, after arriving mid- morning, the site was still so mesmerizing that we lost track of time and stayed until about 3pm.
We took an Uber 7 miles to Kew Gardens and arrived in time for an abbreviated visit. It was not nearly enough time for Kew but it was still an amazing visit.
For a future visit, I will calendar in the whole day for Hampton Court Palace to enjoy it at a leisurely pace.
Have a great trip!
HCP is the best part of a full day’s visit. If you can arrange to go on a day with good weather the gardens, grounds and maze are lovely.
