I am planning to stay in a rental in Anerley while my husband and I visit London this Spring, I just wanted to know if it is a reasonably safe area. As there are a lot of restaurants nearby I would like to feel safe walking after dark to get some dinner, but we aren't into late night clubbing or anything like that. If you're familiar with the area maybe you can help me decide if that's a good place to stay.
The nearest train stop seems to be called Anerley, the next closest is Penge West and the apartment is near Betts Park if google maps can be trusted.
Are you avoiding staying centrally for a reason?
Budgetary reasons. Anything I've been able to find that is central costs twice what this place is going for. I just wanted to make sure the reason for that wasn't that the neighborhood is so shady no one would want to stay there.
What is your budget per night?
There is a perfectly reasonable Ramada hotel where i live in South Ruislip. Prices from £63 pn. Nothing touristy close, its a very safe and quiet residential neighborhood, BUT, its right on the central line in Zone 5, the best tube line, only 30mins into the heart of London. Another thought to consider.
I may decide to spend a little more and go with someplace more central, but I will have to do a little math to see how the saving on transportation balances out. Thanks for the info!
Staying in suburbs to save money very often costs more money in train fares than it saves on the rental. Anerley is a reasonable area (but do check Streetview for the specific location), but it's in Zone 4 so not the cheapest travel. Depending on how long you stay your cheapest ticket option will probably be a weekly four-zone Travelcard, which also has the advantage that you won't be charged higher fares on the Mon-Fri early morning peak hours as you will if you pay for individual journeys or buy day Travelcards.
I looked up Anerley station and while some trains go to London Bridge most of them are on the London Overground East London line, which doesn't go into the centre but heads north through the East End. That would actually make it a good place to stay if you were a hipster clubber :-). However, it means that if you go to or from central London late at night you might have to change onto the Overground at stations that are a bit dubious.
