Ironbridge Gorge Museums- Transition to the National Trust

All 10 museums in the Ironbridge Gorge are now to be managed by the National Trust.

To facilitate the change of ownership, staff transition etc they are to close at the end of February 2026, and will re-open on a phased basis (the timing of which is to be announced) during the remainder of the year.

So just a heads up to check on the progress of the transition before travelling.

We visited Ironbridge Gorge a month ago (April 2026). Unfortunately we didn't realize that all the museums there were closed because of the transition to the National Trust. Nevertheless, we had booked two nights there and really enjoyed the cute little town, strolling across the bridge and enjoying the lush scenery. Since we had a car we visited 2 huge & impressive country estates managed by the National Trust that were within an hour's drive of Ironbridge: Shugborough Estate (built in 1693) and Hanbury Hall (built in the 1700s). Both of these had large, well-preserved mansions and expansive gardens spread over many acres -- well worth a visit if you're in the area.

Ironbridge Gorge has now started the phased reopening. As of early June, Blists Hill and Museum of Iron are open. Blists Hill requires prebooking, even it you are a National Trust member.

What is also interesting is that I was in Shrewsbury a week or so ago, and found out that there is what seems to be a new bus service between Shrewsbury and Telford via Ironbridge- the #96- https://www.selectbusservices.com/_files/ugd/8e2b7f_75104cd4745243d8b38d5fcaea85dfc7.pdf
(I picked up a leaflet at the Bus Station Travel Shop)

I remember we were a bit struggling for a bus when @VAP went, so this is a welcome bus, new or not. It makes it a very easy day trip from the likes of Chester (train to Shrewsbury, then a 5 minute transfer essentially across the road and round the corner to the Bus Station).

This is in addition to the tour bus run by Regional Transport of Shropshire- https://regionaltransport.co.uk/rt_015.htm

When I was last in Ironbridge I used the local bus to get from the Museum of the Gorge up to the Musrum of Iron and Abraham Darby's iron furnace. Otherwise I used Veezu to book their local taxis to get to Blist Hill and back.

I visited the museums about ten years ago and have particularly fond memories of the 1802 Trevithick Locomotive under steam at Blist's Hill
