international travel insurance for seniors on self-guided vacation

As Medicare and medicare supplements do not cover US citizens when outside of the USA borders, what health plan coverage did you purchase for use while vacationing in the UK?

First of all, the blanket statement “Medicare supplements do not cover US citizens when outside the United States” is not accurate for all policies. In fact, many supplemental policies do cover for travel outside the United States.

Your first step is to explore the details of your personal supplement plans to see if you are covered. You may be pleasantly surprised. I did not need to buy any additional coverage since my Medicare Advantage Plan covers urgent or Emergency care worldwide.

Some on the forum suggest GeoBlue for those who still need to get coverage.

Before you got medicare coverage, how were you covered overseas? My employer-provided medical insurance covered me overseas. When I got Medicare coverage, I retained my employer-provided insurance as my supplemental, and it still covers me overseas.

After you check to see if your supplement covers (mine does) then you can go to some general websites to compare coverage. Those include:

www.squaremouth.com

www.insuremytrip.com

I’ve used several different companies but have never had to make a claim, thank goodness.

The policies are usually bundled with medical coverage, trip delay coverage, lost baggage, and other “pieces”. For myself the most important is medevac insurance for a return back to a US hospital. You’ll have to decide what’s important for you.

BTW, if your supp doesn’t cover you can change plans during the open season in October-early December.
