In London Now

Overnight flight LAX to LHR on November 1. Arrived LHR 12 minutes early on 11/2.

Biggest PIA was LAX. What’s new?!?!

I chose to get there three hours earlier than my flight and grateful I did. Check in lines at Terminal 2 ( I flew Virgin Atlantic ) where abhorrent. Have CDC cards on a lanyard just in case but they were never asked for at LAX or arriving at LHR.

From check in at LAX’s Terminal 1 herded onto a shuttle ride across the Tarmac ….kid you not. Took iPhone video of a Delta plane passing us by. All of this took 2 hours. Worst airport and no matter what improvements are made nothing ever changes.

In London’s Richmond neighborhood where I’m staying have only seen 2 older adults wearing masks.

Have mine under my chin just in case a shop owner asks and the lanyard with the CDC cards under my turtle neck.

Ordered and paid for a day 2 Covid test before I left.
It arrived today. Took the test this evening. Will mail
Tomorrow. They will post results on their app in 24 hours.

Weather great ( mid 40’s, have not donned gloves yet) although when I walked to a small market a few from my friends house around 5:30pm felt just a hint of raindrops.

Nothing now though and none predicted.

Off to tomorrow to see the Crystal Park dinosaurs.

Posted by

Haven’t heard of Ted’s bar but you’ve peaked my interest.

Reality is I’m actually in North Sheen. Walking into downtown Richmond tomorrow. Coffee at Butter Beans. About a 30 minute stroll.

Over the weekend will walk through Richmond Park to the lovely White Cross pub on the Thames. After lunch will follow the Thames Path from there to the Richmond Lock Footbridge, cross it and meander down to the Richmond Road bridge and cross back over. Certain crew will be negotiating their shells on the river. Always fun to watch.

Ted’s pub is actually the one they film the outside of for Ted Lasso. We’ve strolled down the street, sat on the bench and watched kids playing soccer or adults playing cricket on the green. If you walk towards Twickenham please cross the bridge onto Eel Pie Island. It has an interesting musical history and is a charming place to stroll.

I have never said “over the moon” and it’s not a phrase you hear much these days!

I have escaped south east England and it’s currently 22 degrees Celsius in the shade on Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands - can’t say I am looking forward to the weather back home next week.

I know how happy you are to be there again!
Fabulous news about going to Wimbledon in July!!

I just read an online article that named The Cricketers pub on The Green in Richmond as being the oldest (1770) pub (and best) in Richmond.
Haven't been there, but it has real ales and the photos look nice.
Same article said The Prince's Head pub has the best food of pubs in Richmond.
It's also on The Green, right next to The Cricketers.
I will have to investigate these two pubs myself someday soon.

Just researching Ted's Bar also known as Ted's Place, mentioned above.
Their website says "Long-running gay venue hosting men-only nights."
So it may be more nightclub that anything else.
So I don't think it's a pub, unless I'm looking at the wrong one???

Posted by

Rebecca sorry for the confusion about the pub but the one I was referring to was the one they use for the outside shots, great location too, on the Ted Lasso show. It’s called The Cricketer and is across the street from Richmond Green, a great place to begin a Thames walk!

Mona, Oh...when you said:
"Love Richmond! Enjoy your time there. Will you visit Ted’s bar, take some Thames walks?"
and
"Ted’s pub is actually the one they film the outside of for Ted Lasso."

Your postings made me think the name of the place was Ted's Bar or Ted's Pub, not The Cricketer.

LOL about Ted’s place confusion.

My 30 year career was as a film and TV location scout and manager. Primarily TV although I have cinematic immortality in the 2nd to last page of credits on 2001’s The Fast The Furious. Then again who watches credits anymore?

Have not seen Ted Lasso but been to the pub where they film the show.

BTW anyone else in London now should see if tickets are available for Blithe Spirit at the Harold Pinter Theatre. Much fun and the stellar cast includes the brilliant Jennifer Saunders. Have enjoyed her talent since discovering French and Saunders ages ago.

Also, close by the Harold Pinter Theatre is the Chinatown restaurant Joy King Lau. The crispy King Prawns in Sweet and Sour sauce are divine. My friend Rick and I returning there soon to enjoy another plate of them!!!!

Another beautiful day outside. Sun, blue skies. A bit sluggish this morning. After theatre long tube/train ride to Richmond and then 25 minute midnight stroll to where my friends house is located. Definitely getting my exercise whilst here.

Maybe Crystal Park dinosaurs today. Maybe just a stroll through Richmond Park to the Thames and lunch at The White Cross. Or maybe a nap.

If you’re at a loose end this Sunday Claudia, you could try the Duck Pond Market in Ruislip. It’s foodies day 10-3.

https://duckpondmarket.com/ruislip

Nothing fancy or mind blowing, but a fun market in a nice part of town. Shops, old buildings, nice houses, Ruislip Lido and the woods… a nice peaceful area you might not have visited before.

Actually Claudia… you probably have lol.

Someone has taken to knitting themed woollen hats for a lot of the red letter boxes in our area, so keep an eye out for those… very well done.

We fly Virgin Atlantic LAX-LHR next month! LAX will be a layover for us, though, so hopefully no having to deal with security.

Happy to hear your trip is going well overall!

Hit or miss on the mask wearing on public transit in London has me thinking we may cab it more than I otherwise would ever do, just to stay on the safe side.

Thank you Mike J. Visited a Duck Pond market in 2019 but not in Ruslip. This one was in Richmond.
Best brownie vendor.

I love where I’m staying but Richmond isn't just around the corner from Central London. After seeing Blithe Spirit last night it was well after midnight when I got back to my friends house. Crowded tube train at 10:30pm from Waterloo to Richmond. Interesting to be walking at midnight. Never felt unsafe, more traffic than expected, and well lit streets.

Its 7pm here now and fireworks occurring. Neighbors celebrating Guy Fawkes.

Tomorrow ( Sunday ) we are attending Guy Fawkes fireworks at Battersea Park. We are cabbing.

Claudia, I am enjoying your trip report and enthusiasm especially since I will be in London (fingers crossed) in June. I don't know when you were last there, but I'm wondering if it were pre-covid. If so, have you noticed any significant changes?

Posted by
8572 posts

Thank you Kim!

Lindy the significant change is that cash is no longer king. Credit and debit cards are. The reality of Covid. Be sure you travel with chip cards.

Fair amount of passengers on public transport ( the tube, busses and trains) wear masks but the majority of the passengers don’t. So far only the staff at the Harold Pinter Theatre asked to see vaccination proof.

Took a long trek out to view the Crystal Palace dinosaurs yesterday. Most enjoyable. As I’m staying in Richmond, an outlying neighborhood, takes more time to get places. Crystal Palace Park isn’t centralized either. So my day consisted of a long bus ride to the Clapham Junction train station, a SW train to Crystal Palace, and the tube later in the day. Returning to Richmond I opted to go Victoria Station and take a train to North Sheen. Doubt I’ll being doing that again. Logistically much easier to use Richmond Station.

Its 5:45am here. I’ve awoken with a sore throat. I’m going to blame the man who was coughing and sniffling and chose to sit next to me at the Clapham Junction train station. Rapture.

Had no real plans today anyhow. Wore myself out yesterday. Just heard my friend head out the front door to work. Think I’ll make the effort to negotiate 3 flights of stairs to the kitchen. Time for coffee.

itv4 has the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes on 7am each morning. Brett’s Holmes is the best. Sorry Benedict.

EDIT: As far as the Battersea Fireworks we opted not to attend. News reports of an expected crowd of 50,000 ended my desire to see the fireworks.
EDIT DEUX: The results of my Day 2 Covid test were posted on line within 24 hours. “No virus detected.”

Enjoy the fireworks!

I wish they'd end. As a PTSD sufferer they are a real problem not to mention the fear caused to millions of pets and animals throughout the country. The fireworks are no longer confined to one night, they are continuously let off for days either side of November 5th.

I signed a petition to restrict the sale of fireworks for commercial displays only and it's gained enough signatures to be debated in parliament however I won't hold my breath.

Today was spent on the couch. Awoke with a sore throat. Its a cold. By Friday it will be affecting my vocal chords and I’ll sound like Talulah Bankhead.

Thankful I didn’t schedule much this week. Doubt Ill go out tomorrow either. I want to be ready for the Lord’s Mayor Parade on Saturday.

On the tube from Richmond to Cannon Street or Mansion House is nearly an hour. Want to go early to watch the set up.

Okay my overnight cold medicine has kicked in. Night night

Thanks everyone for your good wishes. Slept for 12 hours. Awoke without a sore throat.

Cold virus is now in the sniffle and sneeze phase. As previously mentioned by the end of the week it will affect my vocal chords.

Nothing to do but rest and drink tea. Is having Oreos for breakfast a bad thing?

Posted by

Oreos for any meal is not a bad idea...may need to soften them up in a warm drinks first with a sore throat! Thank you for sharing your report, my adult son and I, both vaccinated, traveling to London for 5 days in December after 5 days in Ireland. Do you have a good resource for ordering the 2 day covid test and could I have it sent to my airbnb address? I was hoping to take one test and have it count for US return as well but have been hearing we may not need by then as vaccinated US residents returning. Also my son seems adamant that we should book our train tix from Luton airport into Kensington area now as prices will go up, any advice? Thank you!

Claudia! Hope the sniffles and sneezes dont disrupt your enjoyment of your return too much. Wimbeldon would be a-maze-ing.

And Oreos for breakfast are perfectly acceptable.

Christi hopefully Nigel will chime in and advise you on your train question. He’s very knowledgeable.

I used Prenetics for my Covid test. Paid before I left. Test kit was delivered to where I’m staying on the day I arrived. Took the test, nose and cheek swab, and mailed it back. In 24 hours received email with result (negative).

Still prone knowing from experience that for me it is best to rest. Thankfully nothing too much was planned this week.

Want to feel my best on Saturday for the Lord Mayor’s Parade and a Spitalfields market sojourn. Love getting Christmas cards at Spitalfields.

P.S. Oreos were tasty. As noted cold now in the sneezing and sniffle stage.

Christie, the train from Luton airport goes to London St. Pancras. From St Pancras you could either take a cab to South Kensington or take the Piccadilly tube line to South Kensington tube station. Your son is correct that buying train tickets in advance you can save some money.

Claudia,
That's great news that the sore throat is gone!
Oreos for breakfast with hot tea sounds wonderful.
Whatever a sick person wants, a sick person should have; food-wise.
Too bad there's not a restaurant near you that will deliver some yummy chicken soup.
Feel better soon!

Thanks Rebecca.

After spending another day on the couch sniffling and sneezing I got up, showered, dressed and walked a few blocks to Kurk on Upper Richmond Road West. Good chicken. This time chose the chicken breast pita with roasted corn on the cob as my side.

Feeling normal except for the sniffles but when ordering my meal could hear the vocal chords going.
Seriously, by Friday, when the cold goes into my chest, the raspy deep voice of Taluah Bankhead will emerge.

Noticed a light drizzle had occurred while I walked to the restaurant.

Might go out tomorrow. Might not. Will be all about how I feel when I wake up.

from Luton Airport Parkway there are 8 trains an hour to St Pancras International.

There are "Anytime Day Singles" which are valid on any train all day.

6 out of the 8 trains are operated by Thameslink and stop frequently, and the Anytime Day Singles are the cheapest possible fare, and are unlimited and a walk-up fare. They cost £15.90.

2 trains an hour are operated by the long distance company East Midlands Railway. On some of their trains they offer £3.50 "Advance" fares. These are highly restricted, Specified train only. No refunds. Only valid on booked East Midlands Railway services. This ticket has limited availability.

That means you need to plan just exactly which train time you will catch. The other 6 an hour are not valid, any train time except the exact one you booked are not valid. You would need to buy a completely new ticket and eat the cost of the Advance. You cannot apply it to the new ticket. It is only worth any use as a bookmark or souvenir.

Do you want to plan now for exactly which train you will catch and risk a mistake? The money is attractive - how about the stress?

Once you are in St Pancras International you will need to have or buy an Oyster or use your contactless method.

If you said where in Kensington I could tell you which line and which station you would need on the Tube. There are several choices.

Thank you Nigel. Knew you’d have the correct information.

Fought through my sneezing and sniffling.

7 miles of walking and a couple of train rides.

Did some mudlarking. Found nothing.

The goal was getting to and enjoying scones with cream and jam at Orange Pekoe.

Achieved my goal!

Also found a proper neighborhood pub in Mortlake/Richmond called The Jolly Gardners. Good for a pint, a loo, and listening to regulars complain about the Mayor and how he’s ruined the livelihood of the black cab drivers.

Friday will be a day of rest as I’ll be joining a friend to see Private Lives at the Richmond Theatre that evening.

Weather has been late 40’s early 50’s. Alas, 80% chance of rain tomorrow

EDIT: On trains a good portion of riders are wearing masks but not everyone. I’ve been wearing mine.

Claudia, I'm enjoying reading about your time in London. Thanks for your posts! You noted, "the significant change is that cash is no longer king. Credit and debit cards are. The reality of Covid. Be sure you travel with chip cards."

I've read a fair number of posts about the extent to which England has moved towards cashless transactions during COV-19. When you say, "Be sure you travel with chip card," do you mean chip cards that are the standard in the USA...or chip cards common in the UK that require entering a PIN?

What are you seeing regarding the acceptance of Apple Pay?

Thank you, and have a wonderful time!

Posted by
32519 posts

almost everywhere that takes cards takes contactless cards, and virtually all places which take contactless take Apple Pay/Google Pay/Samsung Pay.

I have the same cash in my wallet that I took out in February 2020. I've used very small amounts of cash twice since then.

Posted by
5239 posts

Whilst cash is being used less and less it's still a perfectly valid means of payment and will be accepted pretty much anywhere. The pandemic did result in a number of establishments refusing to accept cash but as time has progressed most of these have relaxed this rule plus there's always somewhere else that will take cash.

One of my local pubs has taken a novel approach to ordering drinks. A QR code on the table is scanned via your phone which opens a browser windows where you can view what is on offer. You select your drinks (and food), pay via your choice of electronic payment (I use Google Pay) and shortly afterwards your order is brought to your table. No more jostling at the bar, £20 note in your hand trying to attract the attention of the bar staff. The only downside is that one of my mates has refused to move with the times and still owns a basic phone with no internet capability. Consequently when it was his round I made the orders for him and he gave me the cash. That cash is likely to remain in my wallet for some time.

Posted by
8572 posts

I don't use Apple Pay. Probably should but haven't made the change. Does seem UK is strongly pushing to be a cashless society. In the US I use a bank debit card and its the card I’m using here. Sadly, I assumed I’d be able use it as a debit card, punch in my code and be done with my transaction. Thats not happening. Its being read as a credit card so I’m needing to sign for things and I’m sure there’s a transaction fee for doing this. Thankfully, not a shopper so the final financial outcome won’t be too bad. Live and learn.

Rain has arrived. The cold virus as predicted has moved to my vocal chords. Dinner and theatre tonight so staying inside safe and dry, sipping Earl Grey tea and enjoying Hall’s eucalyptus throat lozenges.

EDIT: have canceled dinner and theatre. Don’t wish to disturb other attendees evening with hacking and sneezing.

While not in London, I flew up to Manchester a couple of days ago from Toulouse.

In France, my Google Pay was acceped just about everywhere. Here in Manchester, contactless payment, either via card or mobile device, is encouraged.

And it's so easy.

I'm also seeing more menus via QR code.

The smartphone is becoming invaluable.

When I left Schengen, I was required to show passport and proof of vaccination. My proofcwas on my phone via the pass sanitaire.

Boarding my flight my boarding pass was on my phone. Checking into my hotel was done on my phone as well.

Store purchases or meals..yep...phone.

The only time I used cash was in taxis. The only tine I used a card was when the hotel couldn't use the one I reserved with.

One thing I did find out is make sure the merchant accepts your kind of card. The few times Google Pay wasn't accepted was when it was set to American Express and the merchant didn't take Amex. A quick switch to Mastercard and no problem.

itv4 has the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes on 7am each morning. Brett’s Holmes is the best. Sorry Benedict.

Jeremy Brett’s portrayal of Holmes is the yardstick by which all others should be judged. Most fall way short. Yes, even Benedict, although it could be argued the two are not really comparable. Edward Hardwicke’s Watson is definitive for me too!

Hope you’re slowly emerging from the cold, Claudia. You have my sympathies, it is I feel while not uniquely ours, a very British inconvenience!

She lives!

Spent all day Friday on my friends couch. My cold virus had beaten me into submission. Fever broke at midnight.

Awoke this morning at 7am. Felt “ normal .” Showered, dressed and went downstairs to make coffee. Today’s goal was viewing the set up for the Lord Mayor’s Parade and then buying Christmas Cards at Spitalfields market. 7.6 miles of walking accomplished those goals. Took the District Line from Richmond around 8:30am. Got off at Mansion House. Coffee and pan aux raisin at Pret a Manger.

Meandered and took numerous iPhone images of bands, floats, and parade participants. Then walked to Spitalfields. Bought some Christmas presents and Christmas cards.

Its now just after 7:30pm in London. Been back in Richmond since 4pm. Just devoured a divine dinner. Sated and a bit knackered from the days adventure.

Thankful I was able to get out and about.

EDIT:
100% mask wearers in the crowded tube train-car from Richmond to Mansion House. Not the same on the return. About 80-20 masked. The 20% loud obnoxious males attending the match.

Thanking all who posted publicly and privately regarding my cold. Cold remains. It is in the chest. Deep, resonate coughs. Manageable.

Saw the Lord Mayor’s coach as it departed Mansion House to join the procession. The parade route is a long one. Did not watch the TV coverage.

My friend and I meandered as well as stopped at a Pret A Manger for coffee and pastry.

Enjoyed taking countless iPhone images of parade participants, as well as listening to the bands and pipers. Posted some to my Instagram.

Its 5:48am London time. Trundled downstairs to take last weeks dishes out from the dishwasher and put in last nights.

We devoured takeaway from Annapurna for dinner. Well prepared Nepalese and Indian influenced food. Perfect end to a great day of exploration.

Have made coffee but have not turned on the telly. Enjoying the quiet, while reading emails and news headlines.

No plans today except a possible brunch.

Happy Sunday

EDIT: Brunch was grand. Went to Bill’s in Richmond. Visited a lovely cheese shop, The Teddington Cheese and then a Waitrose. My friend got her groceries. Wandered about the small Duckpond Farmers Market but purchased nothing. Boarded the 33 bus with our 3 bags of groceries. and made our way “home.”

Debating between The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance or an Inspector Morse.

A day of adventure now that the cold virus has left the building. The cough remains though.

My sense of pleasure is wandering with the iphone snapping images to post on my Instagram.

Todays subject matter was the Thames Barrier which is quite a bit aways from Richmond. The meander also included the O2 and the art work along the Thames Path.

By the O2 is the Design Center. Architecturally interesting office and condo buildings as well what developers hope will be a food mecca. I enjoyed discovering it simply because my journey towards the Thames Barrier exposed the entirety of the area.
https://www.greenwichpeninsula.co.uk/whats-on/the-peninsulist/the-design-district-london/

I also checked off a pub I’ve always wanted to visit, The Anchor and Hope, right on the harbor. Met a sweet one year old Beagle named Bill there.

Another long day of public transport: 33 and 37 busses, SW train, and the District Line.

Announcements are made asking passengers to wear masks on transport and in stations. Older adults ( 40 And up ) mums and children seem to comply. The rest of the populous not so much.

Restaurants, shops, grocers, cafes, cinemas, theatre churches, and galleries are all open.

Claudia, the link below is for a rare video created by a fan of the Canuck rock trio 'Rush'. The long song in question is called 'Camera Eye'. I post it here not coz there are so many mad Rush fans on RS, but instead due to its being a tribute to NYC then London. The London part begins around the 6:00 mark.
Note that the band's late drummer, Neil Peart, once worked in a gift shop on Carnaby street, way back when he as a rookie musician seeking success circa '71. As well, his bassist-bandmate Geddy Lee, has long owned a home somewhere in London. Enjoy.

Never a fan of Rush AND I don’t ever click on links. Thank you but no thank you.

Been busy. Saw the wonderful Mirror and The Light
at the Gielgud Theatre last night. Met my friend Rick in Chinatown for a return to Joy King Lau. Ordered virtually the same meal we’d enjoyed before. Once again did not disappoint.

Throughly enjoyed the play but the seats at the Gielgud are barbaric. Had a knot in my back all evening. The play is a part of a Hilary Mantels trilogy. Thankfully you do not need to have seen the first two productions to understand the third. The stars are Bill Miles as Oliver Cromwell and Nathaniel Parker as Henry the VIII. Many will recognize Parker from the Inspector Lynley series.

It was another eventful return from Leicester Square to Richmond. Lengthy tube journey on the District Line. Far more crowded than I expected. Arrived at Richmond Station and never saw the N33 bus…so once again did the 25 minute walk from Richmond Station to my friends house.

Today I spent ambling about the East Sheen Cemetery. I find solace and enjoy reading names of the departed: Percy Larkin, Willoughby Hamilton Power, Maud Stafford Shrigley… the cemetary abuts a path leading into the glorious Richmond Park. Beautiful day, 50’s, blue sky, sun.

The deer were abundant. I spent time on a bench appreciating their beauty as they grazed. I left the park via the Sheen gate which takes you into a Richmond neighborhood.

If you follow Sheen Lane and the Richmond Park Road you’ll discover the pleasant Hare and Hounds. I stopped for a pint while I uploaded my iPhone images to my Instagram. Very nice place but a bit too blue blood for my pocket book. Did not lunch there. Instead got some cake at Cafe Rosa. Not a healthy lunch per se but very tasty.

Watched a few episodes of my new “favorite” show,
Nothing to Declare, then some Antiques Roadshow episodes.

Ended the evening with the first episode of the first season of Endeavor.

11:20pm. Time to meet the Sandman.

Just one of the many reasons us local Los Angeleans call it "HELLAX". It is the worst airport in the United States, possibly the world (in terms of International airports serving a "hub" for a region). I'm not sure its fixable, its just poorly designed and a hell hole. I live 40 minutes way (on average depending upon traffic) and I always have to get there 2+ hours ahead for any flight. Its so bad we tell our friends please don't fly there unless you absolutely have to. I'm not sure how on earth they will be able to make it not a hell hole by 2028 for the Olympics.

Spent a good portion of the day enjoying the Isabella Plantation with Nigel and Carol. Part of the vast Richmond Park. It was a lovely stroll. Beautiful flora with golden, orange, and red hues. We had a grand time.

After a return to Richmond I enjoyed a short nap. So kind of Nigel and Carol to deal with traffic delays coming into and out of Richmond.

After my 30 minute snooze ventured out on foot to The Mitre. Greeted warmly by Rudi, the pub dog, I enjoyed a pint while uploading iPhone images to my Instagram. Strolled back to where I’m staying and fixed a small salad for dinner. Not even 8:30pm and I’m ready for bed.

Haven’t settled on what I’m doing tomorrow. Maybe the Tate Modern, or Gods Own Junk Yard ( if it still exists) or the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill.

Nice to be able to pick and choose.

Claudia, thank you for these updates. I'm so happy you're feeling better and enjoying yourself. I'll be headed over in two weeks and I always review the saved threads with your helpful gems in them before I go. In fact, my own tradition of buying Christmas cards for charity is thanks to you. I'll check St. James of Piccadilly first but I see their market is closed and I'm not sure if the two are related. I now have a backup plan of getting over to Spitalfields Market if the church isn't selling. You are a true value to this forum, enjoy the rest of your trip in good health!

Thank you Points and Miles.

I’ve always enjoyed sharing my London discoveries on the Forum Helpline. London is so much more than Parliament Square, Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge and Portobello Road.

Purchased more Christmas cards today in the Sheen Bookshop on Upper Richmond Road. Its rather fun each morning as I walk out of my friends gated drive. If I turn left I’m headed to Richmond. If I turn right I’m headed to Sheen. Both nearly equal distance from my friends front door.

10:40pm. I can now fall asleep.

Don't forget the lunar eclipse.

2pm UK time.

Lovely sojourn into London today. Headed to the Southbank, then walked along the Thames Path, across Westminster Bridge, through Parliament Square into St James Park up to the Palace. Given the time I heard some band music. Sure enough just missed the 11:30am Changing of the Guard ceremony. No biggie have seen it a few times over the years. Walked past the Palace. Flag was up.
The Queen was in residence.

Found a bench in Green Park. Sat down and people watched. Got up and strolled to the South Kensington Tube Station. From there to Victoria to catch a District Line back to Richmond.

Have stopped at The Red Cow. Have been passing it on my walks to Richmond Station. Decided to pop in. Nice quiet pub. Enjoying my iron infusion and uploading all images to Instagram.

I own the pub at the moment. Barman has gone outside. “ Our House” by Madness on the stereo. LOL. Now its Tina Turner…excellent!!!

Missed the eclipse this morning. Too cloudy.

Another great day out snapping iPhone photos.

Been sitting here with my Guinness pint for over an hour. Still the only patron. 2 men came in, ordered their pints, downed them and went back out. Weren't here more than 20 minutes.

EDIT: Masks required on busses, trains and tube but maybe 60/40 now of the populous abiding.
https://tfl.gov.uk/campaign/face-coverings
My choice has been to wear mine on all public transport. As noted previously its not a “ short “ ride to Richmond. Will say that in my section of the tube train, all passengers were wearing masks.

Hi Claudia,
Thank you for posting your experience. Would love to hear more. We are planning a trip to London between Christmas and New Year's Eve.

Can you elaborate a bit on the day 2 Covid test? May I ask where your bought it? You ordered it at home, in the US, and had it shipped to UK? Was it self-administered? How do you turn it in?

Thanks so much. Great idea with the lanyard.

Loretta, as i was staying with friends I ordered the day 2 test from the US before I left. Was delivered the day I arrived. Simple swab of nose and throat. Mailed it back and 24 hours later received an email stating “ negative for Sars.” Kept the email, texted it to myself so I’d have digital proof. Printed the email
out as well.

I also carried my CDC vaccination cards in a lanyard.

So far I’ve only had to show the CDC cards twice and the negative SARS test once. Each time was to gain access to a theatre production.

The kit I got was from projectscreen.co.uk.

Keep a a digital paper trail and an actual paper trail
Is my advice.

The Tfl.co.uk asks that all travelers in stations and on public transport wear masks. Its not 100% but fairly close on the tube and trains I’ve used since I’ve been here. Rode in friends car yesterday and they were grateful I was willing to wear a mask.

7:02am on Sunday morning. Planes flying over to land at Heathrow. Been up for an hour. Checked emails and overnight news on the iphone, dressed and walked a 100 yards to the nearby Texaco to purchase 2 large bottles of Volvic natural mineral water. Aka, water. Also used the in store Costa coffee making machine to brew a flat white. Back at the house lounging on the couch.

Yesterday was spent indoors doing wash, watching Poirot, Nothing to Declare and Say Yes To The Dress, Atlanta.

Lazy Saturday. Went to our local. Other patrons there but it wasn't crowded or noisy even though the England vs South Africa rugby match was on the big screen. Great match. England eked out a 27-26 victory. We each ordered our own small pizzas. I had a pint, my friend 2 gin and tonics.

Ambled back to the house and watched 2 Midsomers Murders. First episode with John Nettles, the second with Neil Dudgeon.

No set plans today. Going to do some crosswords now while enjoying my java.

Hi Claudia
just been checking things out. See there is live music at the Mitre on Sundays
Also noticed King Henry's Mount on Google Maps in the west of Richmond Park. Looks like a nice viewpoint to check out if not already been there

Thanks Roger. Will check it out.

Was on the outskirts of the park this morning. Walked in via the Kings Ride gate path and out the Sheen Common gate up to Christ Church Road. Took a right and went to Pickle and Rye for a coffee and a piece of pumpkin pie.

Walked back to my friends house stopping at a Waitrose to get 2 bags of mandarins for £2. In SoCal at the Trader Joes grocery stores mandarins are similarly packaged but called Cuties.

Alas when we arrived back home my friend realized she’d left her small backpack at the restaurant. Called them. “Yes, they had it.” She left immediately to go get it.

We have dinner reservations at a well reviewed place called the Dragon Inn.

Does it seem this trip is about food?

Lovely Sunday. Now watching an episode ( probably 2nd season ) of Vera.

Okay it IS ALL about food.

Took the the 337 bus from my friends place towards Clapham Junction and got off at Putney Station. Walked through Putney and over the Putney bridge where I joined the Thames path.

Knew my destination, was heading for the Dove Pub. Been there before. Love the location and the food.

An hour later or so after watching crew practicing on the Thames I arrived 20 minutes early to the front door of The Dove. Opens at noon. Strolled by and sat down on a river path bench. Enjoyed the sun on my face. Lots of people out with prams, and dogs, numerous joggers, many walkers and one or two bicyclists

Just after noon straight up returned to the Dove to be seated. Very tasty meal. Have passed on dessert but still sipping my Guinness. I chose to sit inside, most dinners have opted for outside or upstairs. I have the main dining area to me, myself and I.

I lied. Decided what the heck and ordered the Affogato for dessert. Vanilla ice cream and expresso. A meal like this is why Credit Cards were made. Because I could I booked a table for a table for Sunday. My friend has not been here. It will be my treat as a belated birthday gift.

Intend to use the tube to get back to Richmond. Ravenscourt Park to Richmond. 10 minutes on the District line. Then the 25 minute walk to where I’m staying. Will help with the digestion.

Meant to say while in Putney did stop and purchase some more Christmas Cards. Also bought a birthday card for my host as well as a couple of December Birthday cards.

Weather has been outstanding this whole trip. Very comfortable 50 out. Blue sky, sun. Honestly, my face got a bit sunburned.

Nearly 7am. Been awake since 5am. Have decided to head to Bletchley Park today. Seems like an ideal day for it. I’ll walk to the North Sheen Station, take a train heading to Waterloo and get off at Clapham Junction. Will then board on a train to Bletchley. Another adventure.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union are set to carry out industrial action on two days and eight nights in November and December, in a dispute about new driver schedules.

If the strikes go ahead it would severely disrupt services on the Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly and Victoria lines on Friday 26 November and Saturday 18 December, Transport for London has said.

The action could significantly cut services on those London Underground lines all day, with little or no service in some places.

Services on the morning of Saturday 27 November and Sunday 19 December may also be affected.

Thanks Nigel for the update.

Not even 8pm and I’m in bed. Long day. Out to and back from Bletchley Park. Did not do proper research about getting there and erred. Took a train from North Sheen to Clapham Junction. From there boarded a Southern train to Milton Keyes, knowing I get off at Bletchley. Long train ride as it stopped at numerous stations. My mistake.

The return ride was far quicker as I took the train from Bletchley to Euston Station. Topped up my Oyster Card there. Road a Victoria Line train 1 stop to Victoria Station where I got on a District Line Underground Train to Richmond.

Will report about Bletchley tomorrow. Will say far more impressive than I thought it would be. Worth the expense.

Bletchley Park was fascinating, historic, well run and beautiful. From the young guard at the gate to the “ham” radio enthusiasts to the mansion greeter and canteen food servers I was highly impressed.

The park is an easy well signed stroll from the Bletchley train station.

The easiest and most importantly quickest way to from London to Bletchley is a London Western Train from Euston. As noted I erred and took a train from Clapham Junction which made numerous stops enroute. At least I had left early. The 9:39am train was on time but took nearly an hour and 30 minutes to get to Bletchley. Ah well. Live and learn.

If you go definitely visit the National Radio Museum which is on the park grounds.

Also I’m certain a guided tour of Bletchley might be of interest for many. I saw people with headphones meandering. Didn't ask but surmised there’s a recorded tour on them for those who didn’t want a group tour.

Me? I meander sans headphones. Read signage and was quite happy. Took many iPhone images. All posted on my Instagram now.

BTW its not cheap ( even the concession price ) BUT I now have a season pass which you get with admission. Very nice gift store where I bought Christmas stocking gifts.

Been wanting to visit there for years. Pleased I finally did. Great day out.

Today I’m joining my friend Rick in Hackney to see a 1:30pm panto of Jack and the Beanstalk. Expect we will be the oldest couple in the audience.

IanandJulie as you stated Rick and I weren't the oldest two folks in the audience. Two white haired elderly woman sat near us. However, disheartening to report that the audience was very small. 3 classes of school children and maybe 20 other audience members. One can only hope it’s because it was a weekday matinee performance.

I throughly enjoyed it. Laughed, shouted out, sang along….how can you not with Clive Rowe in the lead?
Second time I’ve enjoyed his work. First time was in Guys and Dolls when he brought the down the house as Nicely Nicely singing You Better Sit Down.
I always laugh when I say the second best theatre production I’ve ever seen ( closing night of Chorus Line in SF was #1 ) was the quintessential US musical, Guys and Dolls, in London in 1996. Cast was Imelda Staunton, Clive Rowe and Clark Peters.

This Jack and The Beanstalk panto was performed in the gorgeous Hackney Empire theatre. Built in 1931.

Very talented cast. Stellar musical accompaniment. Puns, humor, song, dance.

Hour Overground train from Richmond to Hackney Central. You needed a train ticket or money on your Oyster to cover the fare. Ticket staff checked.

Fun day out!

6:40am London time.

Going to be a quiet day by choice. Am meeting a friend for lunch at the pleasant Angel and The Crown pub in Richmond.

Think I’ll bus into Richmond and walk back to where I’m residing. Need to give my body a rest. Been averaging 6 miles a day on foot.

Cold today. 39 degrees at the moment.

Happy Thanksgiving US. Gobble Gobble.

8:21am. Raining this morning.

Plans today are to get to an ATM to get cash to payback my friend for all the tickets he arranged. I think theres a Lloyds Bank in Richmond. Need to double check. If not there is an ATM at the large Sainsbury's which I can walk to in 20 minutes. Think I’ll make a grocery list as well. This sounds like the best choice. Money AND Food!

The proposed TFL strike has happened.

Big travel night as I’m off to Alexandra Palace to see Mark Gatiss in Ghost Story. Also featuring Nicholas Farrell as Scrooge.

Looks like I’ll leave 3 hours early to give myself wiggle room. The Overground trains are running but will be jammed full.

Rain has stopped time to get up and outside!

Nearly 10am GMT. Watching Nothing to Declare Australia while enjoying my morning coffee.

Windy and rainy outside.

Later looking forward to a pub lunch at The Mitre and a warm greeting from Rudi the sweetfaced pub dog.

Yesterday enjoyed a lovely lunch at the Angel and the Crown in Richmond with my friend Maggie. Then back to where I’m staying to nap. With the TFL strike occurring gave myself plenty of leeway time wise to get from Richmond Station on an Overground train to Crouch Hill.

I’d never taken a bus into Richmond ( although the stop is directly across the road. Simply enjoy the 20-25 minute walk ) Went by bus this time and learned its a good 15 minute stroll from the Richmond Bus station to the Richmond train station.

At the train station topped up my Oyster card with a 10 pound note and got on an Overground train to Crouch Hill. Was met there by Rick. Close to an hour journey. Arrived and we enjoyed a coffee at a place called PlanB.

Walked a couple of blocks to where we found the W3 bus stop. 5 minute wait till it arrived, dbl checked it was heading to Alexandra Palace. Hopped on. Bus drops you on the road in front of the Palace where its 3 set of stairs up to it.

Place is huge! Theres an indoor ice rink, as well as a pub/restaurant and more than one theatre space.

Great views. Many iPhone camera images snapped.

Doors opened at 6:15am and as it was a bit windy and cold, enjoyed getting inside and drinking a flat white.. Fair warning there only 3 rectangular tables with benches if you need to sit down. The majority of us stood. The lobby area is massive. Definitely need more places to sit.

2 days before Rick had received notification to stop at the box office to be offered newer and better seats. The long and short of it, production had removed some seats to place some projection equipment. Turns out the “ better “ seats weren't better. Closer to the stage but at an angle. We stuck with the original seats and other to having to listen to the man one seat away chew his food like a cow….and i kept thinking who brings food to eat into a theatre. Realized he’s of a generation who sits on their couch stuffing their face. No concept he wasn’t at a movie theatre or at home. Annoying and during intermission I politely asked if he could be less noisy while eating. He laughed and said “ its a stupid show, we are leaving.” Rapture!

My final bit about the long night out is that actor Nicholas Farrell who played Scrooge in the play was on my train to Crouch Hill and then onto Richmond. Not surprised by this as in a small world moment I’d saw him on the Thames River path in Richmond in 2019. I’ll surmise his home is in Richmond.

While waiting on the Gospel Oak Platform I took the moment to approach and say through my mask
“you did well tonight.” He was surprised but said through his mask “ oh, thank you.”

Getting my “needed return to the states test” on Monday morning. Fly back LHR to LAX on Wednesday. Sigh.

Tomorrow evening Christmas at Kew Gardens. Looking forward to it. Hope Mother Nature rids herself of todays rain by then.

EDIT; Pub lunch at The Mitre was great. Rudi very happy to see us. I got a side plate of toasted bread with a small bowl of olives. Main course was a great salad with parmesan cheese shavings and tasty balsamic vinegar and oil dressing.

And yes, I got a Guinness which I sipped while my friend enjoyed 2 mugs of mulled wine.

Thank you, Claudia, for your posts which paint such pictures that I can see through your eyes (including the clueless loud chewer, although, he was certainly entertaining)! Rats. Wrote a long post earlier, dropped phone and the post was gone. Sigh.

Lets hope second time is the charm.

7:43am here. Been awake since 5:30am when I heard my friend depart for work.

I have a 9:30am appointment to get the “ ok to fly back to the US “ test. I’ll get results tonight and will share with the airline.

Its cold! 28 outside. I’m resting today. My knee did not swell but a bit tender and my bedroom is on the 3rd floor of my friend’s home.

I have showered and dressed. After visiting the pharmacy I’ll walk another few blocks to the Waitrose in Sheen to purchase some coffee pods to replenish all that I used up. The coffee maker is an expresso machine so I use 3 pods to make “coffee.” Anyway, need to buy the pods.

I’ll do takeaway tonight from nearby Kurk.

Been a truly wonderful month. Have met up with friends, seen new sites, revisited old ones, appreciated theatre, meandered about cemeteries and parks, found new pubs and snapped iPhone images to document each day.

Returning in July to enjoy Wimbledon and summer weather.

Thanks to all who have commented publicly and privately about my posts.

I love London and throughly enjoy sharing about neighborhoods, sites, shops, restaurants, museums and pubs that most tourists don’t see and now might consider.

Just checked LA weather. Its 55….and you all thought its always sunny and warm in the City of Angels. Trust me 55 for LA is cold!

1:28pm. Enjoying a decaf coffee following a slow morning which started out with my 9:30am Covid test for my flight back to the US. Results are to be emailed to me tonight. If they aren't the pharmacy is close by and I’ll raise holy hell with them in the morning.

Did a 3.8 mile casual walk in Richmond Park. Always a pleasure. No problem from the knee. Loads of dogs to make me smile and fall colors are gorgeous.

After shopping at East Sheen Waitrose for some coffee pods for my friends Expresso machine and enjoying a raisin au pain and flat white coffee at Harrison and Hoole I entered the park via The Sheen Gate. Meandered. Thought about walking over to Pen Ponds Cafe but didn't know if they were open so exited the park at Kings Gate which is close to where I’ve been staying.

My friend’s house cleaner had arrived just as i was leaving and was then leaving just as I returned. Its garbage day so we both moved the bins off the sidewalk. House is spotless. Wash being done.
I’m having peanut M & M’s.

Life is good.

Tomorrow laundry and a late lunch of bangers and mash.

Nearly midnight on the last evening of my 1 month visit to London. Knew I shouldn’t of had a real Coke with my takeaway dinner. I’m wide awake.

Spent the last hour packing, repacking, and texting to see if my neighbor was still coming to pick me up.
He isn’t so I’m pleased I brought US currency for a taxi home from LAX.

I have digital vaccine and negative test results on my iphone as well printed copies. My airline has digital
documentation as well. Boarding pass wouldn’t print out but do have on the iPhone Not checking luggage. Carry on.

Keeping the faith my early evening arrival and progress through immigration will be painless. 20 Christmas cards and 5 ornaments are all I purchased during my stay. Have receipts.

Have Global Entry. Hope immigration is fully staffed so my return is without LAX drama.

Good morning from the Land of la.

7:30am and I’ve been up since 5:17am. Seems the body clock is already on PST.

Here’s the recap of my departure from Heathrow to LAX.

Took an Addison Lee cab from my friends home in Richmond to Terminal 3 at LHR. Wish I could tell you the fare but my friend arranged and paid for the transit. I do know I tipped the driver 5£. I’d say the ride took 25 minutes.

Had all my health documentation in my neck wallet and on my iphone. There was an employee at a small wheeled lectern who was checking your vaccine and test result documentation. Not a cursory glance either. She also checked off something on her clipboard which allowed me to head towards a check in counter window. There were 5 people ( a family ) in front of me.

The Virgin Airline check in counter was well staffed. For VA flights, there are separate windows dedicated to your choice of airfare: Upper, Premium Economy and Economy. I’d flown Premium Economy. There were 3 people ahead of me in the line I choose. Pleasant exchange with counter employee
and then took the nearby elevator up a floor. Exited, turned left directly into the massive shopping/waiting area. Checked the digital display to see which departure gate my fight would arrive at. I was too early, gate had yet to be assigned. Took a seat so I could see the board and removed my crossword booklet from my backpack. 40 minutes later the gate was posted and I began the long walk to it. Arrived and sat down.

Boarding for the 2pm departure began around 1pm. A reason why I appreciate Virgin Airlines is they know you don't like waiting so they immediately assure your comfort while you wait for take off. They offer juice or water. I had an orange juice.

For the first time VA had changed my seat assignment. Noticed the night before and by researching on line made certain I was on an aisle seat. I was 2 rows ahead of my preferred seat.
In my “ normal “ seat there’s only one seat adjacent on my right side. In the reassignment I’d been moved to the center of the plane with 2 seats adjacent. I’m left handed. Always want that side
not jammed against a plane wall or another human.
To my happiness the seat reassignment was fine. What was even better is that the middle seat was unoccupied. Other than a toddler who cried out off and on throughout the 11 hour flight the ride home was uneventful. Watched 2 films and 1 documentary. Enjoyed the food that was served. Dozed off once. Thankfully no drooling was involved.

Landed a few minutes early at LAX. Alas the plane hadn’t yet been assigned an arrival gate. So we waited 15 minutes before a gate was assigned. Then another 10 minutes waiting for cabin doors to be opened so we could deplane. Followed signage to immigration. US CITIZENS line. At least 300 passengers in the immigration area of The Thomas Bradley terminal.

Did not see any Global Entry signage. Line was moving quickly and as I was texting “ Landed, “ to friends I saw a free standing sign say “ Global Entry appointments” with an arrow. I also saw an employee a few feet away directing passengers to another area than where I was standing. Got her attention and asked “where are the Global Entry machines?” She unhooked the theatre rope and directed me to those machines. Removed my glasses, had my picture taken, got a green “ go “ result and headed out. A uniformed man had an iPad and as I walked by said, “ Welcome back Claudia” Orwell’s Big Brother exists. Used the hidden-away less-occupied-restroom and then exited the terminal.

Nearly 2 years ago airport management made the decision to set up Uber, Lyft and Taxi stations away from the terminals. Thus you need to board an LAX.it shuttle to get to it.

Going to continue this missive in another post. Have a phone call…

Posted by
8572 posts

A LAX.it shuttle pulled up just as I exited. Cued behind 20 others and took a seat. There were about 40 of us with luggage on the bus. 8-10 minute ride to the transport area. On the drive over our driver announced “ if you are taking an Uber or Lyft make your phone call now.” As we approached the transit iarea he stated, “ Uber to your left, taxis in the center and Lyft on your right.” I’d snagged a seat behind the driver hoping he’d open front AND middle doors. He did and I was off the bus with my luggage in seconds. Immediately surveyed my surroundings. There we already 30 people waiting in the taxi line. I joined the queue.

15 minutes later I was in a Bell Cab heading home. Traffic was LA typical. Turned the key into my apartment bldg an hour after my flight had landed.

Have to say having Global Entry to use at LAX is worth it.

Good night of sleep. Nice to be home.

Booking July flight next week.

EDIT: All the above posted in the Trip Report category as well.
