I can't believe 'Books for Cooks' still exists. I still remember my visit there very fondly.

Heidi, the founder, is German, and I read about her and this bookstore in a German newspaper about (maybe) 35 years ago. Shortly afterwards, we were in London anyway and had a fantastic lunch there surrounded by all my favorite books. Since I'm passionate about cooking, I often think about this wonderful experience. I remember it was January and it was so warm that we were able to have a coffee outside one afternoon in Notting Hill (where the bookstore is). I wish I could remember when exactly that was :-)

Even after such a long time, I would recommend stopping by there.

Thanks for sharing, phred.

Skoob is one of my favorite places, but it's painful to limit myself to what I'm willing to lug home. . . .

Thanks for sharing! While a couple of my favorites are missing from this list, I have happy memories of some of these places, and am planning to visit a few more on my next trip to London.

Dang!

My secret haven has been identified. Hurlingham Books. Arrrgghhh.

Okay, I’m over it.

If you go be sure to dine at the River Cafe. Visit the book store and then, dependent on the weather, either stroll along the Thames River Path to The Dove Pub or take the Underground back to near where you are staying.

Will say one of the best meals I’ve eaten was at The Dove Pub. Pumpkin Sage soup.

I'm surprised one of my favorite shops didn't make the list: Marchpane, on Cecil Court, a pedestrianized little street near Covent Garden. They specialize in vintage and rare children's books, and also on Alice in Wonderland--it's a tiny shop but an absolute feast for the eyes if you love the charming illustrated covers of these books. I always manage to find something in my budget to add to my collection, and have been delighted to see other books that are far out of my range.

Dang! We need a two week trip just for bookstores...and only the clothes on our backs for empty suitcases. Not to mention the bookstores and towns out of London...

I'm so glad I'm not into buying jewelry or fancy purses, and I'm happy (mostly;) with clothes from yard sales, thrift stores, outlets, and Costco.

Great winter itinerary...I had hoped to see some Christmas lights. Oh well.
