hub by Premier Inn London Shoreditch or Travelodge London City Hotel?

Anyone have any opinions on these 2 hotels? My kid & I will be in town mid July, both of these are pretty highly rated on Tripadvisor, &

they are both very reasonable, price wise. As it's our first visit to London (1 week stay), we want to see all the usual spots, as well as some under the radar spots, such as the Sky Garden. Any opinions or suggestions would be appreciated, trying to keep it around $200 - both of these are considerably less. I'm especially interested in Shoreditch - it seems to be a cool, funky type area. I don't need fancy accommodations, but I do want private bath & air conditioning. Plus, both these hotels seem to be in close proximity to the underground. Thanks in advance.

The PI Hubs are great for one person. I have never seen a Hub room with 2 beds. They are very small rooms.

There are a lot of Premier Inns in close proximity to the Tube. I agree that the PI Hubs are very small. You'd really be better off choosing a regular one. The Premier Inn Paddington is located right next to Paddington Station, which would serve your purpose. I stayed at the PI County Hall, which I really liked as it was very near Waterloo Station and within walking distance of Westminster and Kensington. There are many others as well, like PI Victoria, and so on.

I have not stayed at a Travelodge in London but from everything I've read here, it's a cut below the Premier Inns. Good for a budget but not as nice as PIs. One nice feature of Premier Inns is that if you pay for breakfast, your child eats free.

I just looked at the descriptions/ pix for hub by Premier Inn London Shoreditch and don't see any 2-bed room options for that one. Not sure how old your child is but you're probably not planning to share a bed?

Are the kids under 16?

p.s. Just reread your post and saw it was a singular kid so my question doesn’t really matter.

1) The Hub hotels are quite compact and the bed is usually pushed against the wall. I think the regular Premier Inns are preferable to the Hubs for two persons.

2) Travelodge will not hold your luggage before you check in if you arrive early or after check out. Most other hotels will do this. It may not be an issue for you, but it is something to consider if you arrive early.

Forget the PI Hubs. Rooms way too small for 2 people who aren’t a couple. How old is “ the kid?”

Peruse the Premiere Inn website. PI’s have AC.

Uncertain why you think the Sky Garden is under the radar. Far from it.

Been visiting London since 1972.

Was there for 6 weeks this past year. Stayed in Bayswater for a week and in the Holborn neighborhood for the remainder of my visit.

Kid will be 14. The room I was looking at had a King size bed so I thought, for the price, & even though the room is tiny, that might suffice if it means saving close to $700. Leaning towards the Travelodge though, as it's ranked #1 on Tripadvisor & it's still under $200.00. The luggage thing isn't really an issue, we're traveling light, just using travel backpacks. This is week 1 of a 6 week European trip, so I'm looking to minimize expenses wherever I can.

There is absolutely no way I’d share a Hub with a kid. While I do love the Hub concept, it’s definitely suited to a single traveller or a very close couple.

The Travelodge is a bit handier for the tube. Shoreditch High Street Station is on the Overground and has limited utility for seeing the usual tourist sights.

With such a budget in July you may want to be adding a few minutes journey time. Sacrifice location a bit for price.
Looking at random dates in July the new Premier Inn at Hammersmith Talgarth Road looks a reasonable one. Likewise the PI at Croydon Central (a fast and frequent train ride into London, within the fare zones so very little extra cost) or the one at Wimbledon Broadway all look good. Wimbledon is on the tube, or fast and very frequent trains into Waterloo.
Bromley is another good one, right by Bromley South station for trains into London, in the fare zones.

Take a look at 63 Bayswater. Free continental breakfast

Contact them about either the twin room that has 2 single beds, shower and toilet or the executive room with 2 single beds, shower and toilet.

63 is a 10-15 minute stroll from Paddington Station. Its a 1/2 block from the Lancaster Gate Underground station as well as being across the road from the Lancaster Gate entrance into Hyde Park/Kensington Garden.

The Mitre pub is a 5 minute walk and a favorite restaurant, Tudkin Flavors of Malaysia, maybe 10 minutes away.

Book now.

Edit: for more intel peruse my recent Trip Report, “Back in London,” which I shared daily last Fall.

There is no way I would share a Hub room with anyone.

I was going to suggest looking at Yotel in Bethnal Green if you like that area, but it seems to have closed? I can find no trace of it anymore.

Yotel London City is the location they're promoting now. It's on Clerkenwell Road, just west of Shoreditch. It would be somewhere I'd stay 9the area at least). Good for Old Street, Farringdon and Barbican tube stations. Easy to walk down into Shoreditch and Spitalfields / Brick Lane, if you are interested in that as well as the tourist big hitters in central London. Might fit your budget and be quite funky, though I've never stayed there.

From the photos, it appears all the Yotel rooms with two beds involve an upper bunk.

After a browse through the TA reviews, I'm thinking the same thing, Nigel. There's a very suspicious amount from one-time posters, and almost all of them also suspiciously mention the reception staff by name. Highly unusual, and I wouldn't trust any of them to be credible. Personally? I would discard all of those hit-and-run reviews and see what you're left with; something smells a little stinky in Denmark...er, London.

Yes I saw that. If the price is right that would be fine with me in the OP's circumstances. I'm thinking it's a brand new hotel. I don't recall ever seeing it in person and it seems to have replaced the Bethnal Green one. I thought it might suit if the OP has a young person accompanying them. I think the branding and design might appeal to the young. It's a much better location than the Bethnal Green one. If you're coming in from Heathrow on the Elizabeth Line it's 5 minutes walk from Farringdon. Bosch. Right there.

edit: Yotel Shoreditch is now Four Points Flex by Sheraton London Shoreditch East.

Yotel London City has been open since 2020. I'm obviously not paying attention.

I found Premier Inn near Heathrow had really good (but too high) beds. The Travelodge in Southwark was good price, good breakfast. With a pub across the street that had good burgers, and was close to Burough Market. Not the most travel links with bus and tube back then, but taxi helped. Could be better now.
Hampstead has Pax Lodge, the WAGGGS hostel that has private rooms. They also have another world centre in Switzerland too. Don't have to be a scout to stay there, very family friendly and secure. Plus there's often 18-22 yr olds volunteer staff from all over the world, can have fun events in the evenings especially for 14-16 year olds that are educational or some trips to Camden for cool shopping. Depends on what your kid likes to do. :)

I stayed the Gatwick Yotel years ago. It was much smaller than a Hub hotel and had a clear glass partition between the bathroom and the bedroom. The toilet was in full view. If you are considering a Yotel, I’d closely read the reviews to make sure they aren’t using the same design for their hotels in the city.
