How to train from York to London

Does anyone have advice on the best route from York to the Mayfair/Green Park area of London? We want to do as quick and direct a route as possible. Do we need to buy tickets in advance?

Trains from York arrive at London's Kings Cross station (2 hours), from where you can get a fairly cheap taxi to your hotel. There's no requirement to buy train tickets in advance, but they can be much cheaper if you commit to a particular departure a month or two in advance.

The best rail prices are for services booked 12 weeks in advance and for off peak trains or for travel at the weekend, although with the latter, you need to check that there are no planned engineering works that will involve bus replacement services.

These cheaper tickets are only valid for a chosen timed train and if you miss it, you will have to buy another ticket. Buy your tickets from Virgin, the rail operator, not from websites such as trainline.com.

Once in London the most direct route and the most expensive would be by taxi, but you also have the option of buses or the tube, but taxi is easier if you have luggage. A taxi will cost c £10/15.

It's been noted that trains from York arrive at King's Cross

I'll add that that King's Cross/St. Pancras tube station handles both the Piccadilly and Victoria lines, both of which serve the Green Park station. So yes, a cab will be as quick as possible AND yet you might spend equal time and significantly less were you to take the underground.

As to advanced purchase - it all depends on when you go. When I bought mine (last week) for mid-May, YRK-KGX ranged from 14.50 to 38.00 per person depending on what time of which day you travel.
