How to get from Heathrow to Charing cross?

Hi this will be my first time using London public transport not a shame to say I’m a little worried. How do I get from Heathrow Airport to Charing Cross using public transport? Thank you for any help that you can offer?

You will want to familiarize yourself with the Transport for London ( tfl) website and app, and the plan a journey feature. You could also use the City Mapper app or Google Maps.

The options from LHR terminal 5 are the Heathrow Express to Paddington, then the Bakerloo tube to Charing Cross OR the Elizabeth Line from LHR to Tottenham Court Rd station, then the Northern line to Charing Cross.

Or, the least expensive way, Piccadilly line to Piccadilly Circus, then the Bakerloo line to Charing Cross.

On the Underground from Heathrow, I would take the Piccadilly Line to Hammersmith, then change to an eastbound District Line train to Embankment, a five-minute walk to Charing Cross.

To summarise, you have three options:

-Fastest, but most expensive way- Heathrow Express train to Paddington and then Bakerloo line to Charing Cross- about 40 minutes- and cheaper if you book the Heathrow Express in advance

-Slightly slower and less expensive way- Elizabeth Line train to Tottenham Court Road and then Northern line to Charing Cross- about 45 minutes

-Slowest and cheapest way- Piccadilly line to Leicester Square and then walk a few blocks- over an hour. I do not recommend this route especially if you have luggage as the carriages are small and the trains get crowded. I would only do this if you are trying to minimise what you spend getting in from the airport.

Good luck!

The answer depends a bit on exactly where you are going. It may be to Charing Cross to catch a train or to get to a hotel near there. For example Citadines Trafalgar Square is often described as Charing Cross but is just as near Embankment.

Bear in mind that the Heathrow Express only runs very 15 minutes, so if you mss one the time saving can disappear.

Finally, the route taking the Piccadilly line to Hammersmith and then the District line to Embankment is far easier to navigate with bags as the change is literally across the platform, about 10 yards. The other options require you to change to completely different lines at different levels.

With all options getting seats is fine as the trains start at LHR.

and Heathrow to Leicester Square or Embankment is not over an hour, it is 49 minutes from Heathrow Central (Terminals 2 and 3). It is also a much easier walk up the street into Charing Cross Station from Embankment than from Leicester Square.

To clarify, the quoted time of an hour by using the Piccadilly line with no changes includes the walking time to Charing Cross (roughly 50 mins train + 10 mins walk). I know this is a popular method of getting to/from the airport on this forum but with luggage it gets very crowded very quickly, especially at rush hour.
