How safe is Maidstone today?

Hi everyone,

I've booked accomodation in Maidstone (Kent) for a multi-day event just outside Maidstone. For logistical reasons, my accomodation options are very limited. Snooped through the crime maps etc as I do whenever I travel, and now I'm having second thoughts. It's hard to find up-to-date reviews from real people; most posts online on the topic are 5-10 years old at least. Google street view of the town predates covid.

Is Maidstone really as sketchy as people online make it seem? (Been seeing a lot of comments about how the town has gone downhill the past couple years, lots of crime, etc)

I'm a woman travelling alone, will be staying in Maidstone centre near Fremlin Walk. For reference, I'm from a much larger but relatively safe North American city (Toronto). The most unsafe I've ever felt in the UK was walking down Jamaica St. in Glasgow in the evening.

Thanks!

The modern obsession with uk crime is unusual and a very recent development.

Toronto would be very very unsafe by UK standards. Maidstone is absolutely fine, as is everywhere in the UK.

The only part of Maidstone where street view predates covid is the high street, which was pedestrianised. Pedestrianisation always makes things more, not less, pleasant.

Maidstone is absolutely fine, I wouldn't worry.

I don't know that I agree that people have a specific concern with safety in the UK- I'd say one of the more common questions I see on here, across countries, is "Is X place safe?"

There are some news outlets and state actors that have a narrative they want to push. You may have seen the videos of the Scottish “man” - obviously AI generated - who tours Russia pointing out its many liberal virtues when compared with UK. And those of us old enough will recall the CIA’s messaging about suicide rates in “socialist” Sweden, a jolly “fact” they made up during a brainstorming session at Langley.

I don’t know Maidstone specifically but I seriously doubt it is a hot bed of crime.
Where have you seen all the negative comments? There has been a real trend over here, especially on social media, of talking down city centres and talking up the risk of crime based on very little. Some is politically driven but a lot is just people having a bit of a whinge. Many city centres have struggled with changes in the economy over the last decade but it is (usually) no where near as bad as social media makes out.

Obviously there will be some crime, no where is crime free, but I would always take crime figures etc with a pinch( actually a sack) of salt and I am saying that as someone who has worked in law enforcement for 20+ years! There are so many variables in how they are gathered and reported they often aren’t that helpful at all.

What specifically are you worried about? I’m very happy to try and calm your nerves.

Agree with other responders.

Perhaps I'm getting my grumpy old lady knickers in a twist, but I find it depressing.

Fortunately forums like this we can try and talk sense into those who are at the nervous stage.

How many thousands of others, who would otherwise be interested in coming, have just written the UK off because of these baseless fears of crime? I want to show off the many many wonderful places this country has, and it's so sad to see it talked about like this.

Anyway time for a gin.

Couldn't agree more. As a retired police officer I know only too well how crime figures are manipulated. I recall having to deal with a large scale pub fight where one crime of 'violent disorder' would usually have been recorded but this would be listed as only one crime so one of the crime reporting team insisted I list every assault as a crime, every table or glass broken listed as an incident of criminal damage, possession of an offensive weapon and so on. What should have been recorded as one incident of violent disorder ended up being in excess of 30 recorded crimes. Of course these were all classed as 'detected crimes' and therefore looked good on the crime figures provided to the government. The unintended consequences of setting targets.

"The unintended consequences of setting targets."

"When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure". It is named after British economist Charles Goodhart, who is credited with expressing the core idea of the adage in a 1975 article on monetary policy in the United Kingdom:[2]

Serves me right for looking up Reddit posts and crime maps at 1am!

Thank you everyone for calming my worries.

Toronto is unsafe in quite different ways from how the UK is unsafe, so sometimes it's hard to guage what a town/area is like before visiting it. (Come to think of it, Dover is ranked similarly to Maidstone and I didn't unsafe there, even walking around at night.)

Thanks again! :)

So long as you take the usual streetsmart precautions, you'll be fine. You might see the odd homeless or drunk person but you are highly unlikely to get into any trouble.
I was in Toronto a few years ago and never felt unsafe. It felt just like any large UK city to me. The only time I have felt threatened was also in Glasgow, where the beggars were quite aggressive when ignored.
