How can I use British rail passes with National Rail

I booked two British National Rail passes from RailEurope.com and so far I am unable to use these passes to travel on British National Rail trains.

These passes are electronically scannable passes, which clearly state that any printed copy is invalid.
The issues with these passes are:
1. There is no place to scan them at the train station entrances or exits. The train station entrances require a printed ticket to enter and the train station exits require a printed ticket to exit.
2. The station guards at both the entrances and exits will not accept the electronic pass.
3. The ticketing agents at the ticket booths say they have no idea on how they would be usable.

Can you please help by explaining how these tickets are supposed to be used to travel on the British National Rail system?

I am currently in England and am very frustrated over how the tickets has not worked.

Thank-you for any help you can give.

Most barriers have a scanner for e- and m- tickets as they are used to validate print at home tickets and ones held on mobile apps. Have you been attempting to use these?

Look at the barrier and you will see a slot into which people are putting credit card size tickets to open the barrier. Now, you should also see a glass scanner on the same barrier for that is where your ‘ticket’ may scan?

It might have been prudent if you had asked on this forum what people thought of buying such passes and stated your intended journeys.

The stations I went to did not have any obvious scanner and the gate guards told me to go buy a ticket.
I’ll spend some more time to see where a scanner is on the turnstile.

So I finally found gate guards that will accept the rail pass. I still haven’t seen a scanner on any turnstile gate, just the paper ticket reader.

As long as I see gate guards, I think the passes work. I am still not sure why some National Rail employees don’t understand the e-ticket.

Thanks all for the help.

There are no National Rail employees that you will meet. They are all employees of different private companies, and each company does things things differently.

Some stations have barriers at all platforms, some at some platforms, many have no barriers. Some barriers have scanners; most don't have them.

I'd much rather have a paper ticket.

Eric, you haven't told us where you are travelling or where you had problems. Some of us know many of the UK rail companies pretty well, and some of us know a fair number of the stations.

Fwiw, this might be part answer, at the busy commuter station where I live, the person at the gates checking any ticket problems is not a National Rail / train company employee, they use a separate revenue enforcement company for this (I can't remember which one) so there might be a training/awareness issue at the stations you visited .

the BritRail link in the first post does say not all station ticket gates have scanners or hand held readers yet, but the eMobile ticket is still designed to be visually inspected, so your travel should be seamless.

Just how widespread are these scanners (I infer they're for access to the platform areas) now? In 2017, we only saw one station (Kings Cross) with restricted entry. Are they being put in at all stations now?
