If you're traveling by train, you might look at the Principal York Hotel - it is connected to the train station, so you can walk from the platform right into the hotel. It's a short walk into the historic center of town. We stayed there during our visit and found it quite comfortable - we may have found a deal on Expedia.

On our last day we checked out, stored our luggage, and visited the railroad museum, which is nearby. Then we were able to walk back, collect our luggage and jump on the next train to London.

I just stayed a couple of nights at the Churchill hotel (Monday and Tuesday nights of this week) and had stayed there previously on a Rick Steves tour (they don't stay there any longer but I'm not sure where they stay). The staff were very nice, garden casual pizza food was quite good and I would go back there.

I enjoyed a wonderful curry meal at the Viceroy in Monkgate. I'd eaten there years ago, again with a RS tour, and that tour must not have had a decent budget for food that time. This time, on a small group tour with Mark Seymour, he ordered a bunch of dishes for us to try and it was amazing and delicious. The staff were very accommodating to our small group.

I also ate on my own at Betty's, the famous tea rooms. I'd had tea at their cafe in Harrogate a few weeks before but enjoyed a sandwich and dessert there this last Tuesday on my own.

Restaurants are plentiful in York!

I’m just returning home from 6 nights in York. I stayed at the grand York. Great location and fabulous hotel.

For more details on my trip, look for my trip report next week.

We had a delightful pub lunch at The House of the Trembling Madness - not one bit fancy, but it was atmospheric and the food was good. I just saw the name of the pub and knew I wanted to eat there! It was raining that afternoon so we stayed a while and tried a couple of beers/ciders. We had an enjoyable chat with a British couple at the next table - one of those WOW! travel moments.

For something a little different, there is the Bar Convent on Blossom Street which does B&B and has a very interesting history. It is just outside Miclegate BAr and a 5-7 minute walk from York Railway Station. Their cafe is recommended for lunches - it isn't on the tourist beat but popular with locals.
