Hotel recommendations for West End

Hello. We have a short stay over in London in December to see some plays and are looking for a comfortable hotel for 4 adults to share a room. Any suggestions will be much appreciated! Thanks.

You'll get more pertinent suggestions if you tell us your nightly budget in pounds.

In the meantime, you might take a look at booking.com. You can specify the area, your budget, etc. There aren't an awful lot of hotel rooms that accommodate 4 people, and if your trip is over the holidays, demand will be pretty high. When you find some options, ask here to see whether anyone is familiar with them.

I haven't stayed in that area myself; it's crowded and busy-busy-busy. If you're noise-sensitive, read reviews carefully. The booking.com reviews have been generally reliable for me. You can't leave a review on that website unless you've stayed at the property.

You may well save by making a direct reservation on the hotel's website; I'm increasingly finding booking.com to be quite a bit more expensive, though there is the occasional exception.

It's going to a challenge to find rooms to accommodate 4 adults anywhere in London and any that are central to the West End are not going to be cheap if they are any sort of decent quality. Hotel rooms are usually quite small in London, especially if you are used to North American rooms.

Rooms to sleep 4 adults are not really a thing in London. You will need 2 rooms.

I recommend the Clermont Charing Cross for location and quality but I don’t know your budget. There are lots of really nice hotels in that area. The Clermont is more at the moderate end of the price range but will be close to £300 a night for 2 people.

Likewise, I've never heard of a hotel room sleeping four adults. You'll likely end up taking two rooms. Any guidance on budget?

Re West End, it's where we always stay, and love it. But geographically speaking, it's a big area. For theatre I'd generally recommend Covent Garden, Soho, Mayfair etc. It is an expensive area.

Yes I love staying in the West End too but can rarely justify the cost. Everything is within walking distance but it is expensive!

There are some hotels in London that sleep four adults but they will very much be at the budget end of things and probably not in the West End. You can use www.booking.com or similar to search, and you might some in areas such as Kings Cross or Paddington.

The American style where you might find two double/Queen/King beds in a large room is extremely unusual here.

I have seen rooms in budget hotels where there’s maybe a double bed and a set of bunk beds or a pair of twins, and it’s all very cramped and small. The Darlington Hyde Park is a decent hotel of this type: https://www.guestreservations.com/the-darlington-hyde-park/booking?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADiMQMZzW5oMFAyAIkuZmWqYO0kza&gclid=Cj0KCQjw05i4BhDiARIsAB_2wfAG5XcPEf0I8e6dNZWnO0UcH4u4PR2LOWmTgwfZxcehH8jFzt2SxtoaAnHMEALw_wcB

The Marriott County Hall has rooms with two double bedrooms and is in a very central location for you BUT, for a random couple of midweek nights in early November (pretty low season) the rate is £823 per room and upwards.

You could get two double rooms at the Premier Inn County Hall for barely half that. Same location, just round the back without the river views.

One advantage of taking two double rooms instead of one quad: you'd have two bathrooms, which might significantly speed up the process of getting ready to leave the hotel in the morning.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Our top end is probably around 500 a night. Though cheaper is better, but this is a special trip with our two adult children who are graduating from university soon.

Does anyone have experience with the Hausd - Leicester Square?

I’d never heard of the Hausd Leicester Square, and a search online doesn’t even clarify to me whether it’s an apartment or an aparthotel. There’s only one review on TripAdvisor and it’s a one-star “terrible”. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g186338-d27523688-Reviews-Hausd_Leicester_Square-London_England.html

You could look at one of the reputable aparthotel providers - Locke (their Broken Wharf property gets a lot of love here), Native, Marlin, Citadines to name but a few. I think they would give you a bit more space to spread out. Here’s the Marlin link.

It’s culturally quite unusual for adult children to share hotel rooms with their parents in the UK, and you’ll understand why when you see the size of London hotel rooms.

Sorry for any confusion - 500 pounds.

We've been to London before when the kids were teens so we know in general about hotel room sizes. The last trip we stayed in a hotel recommended by Rick's book, but this trip are hoping for something more upscale.

Thanks again for all the tips!

£500 is a lot of money but actually a low budget for 4 people in the West End. Maybe try the Premier Inn Holborn which isn’t too far away, although you’d need 2 rooms. Or look for Airbnb apartments. I’m not sure if any of the apart hotels sleep 4 in proper beds. 2 adult siblings can’t really share a sofa bed.
