Hotel recommendations for Oxford?

Seeking recommendations...Compared to other times I ask this question, I concede this is more constrained.

We want to stay in City Center. Our priorities are quality, cleanliness, and location.
Not looking for bargain/value as top criteria; we are OK paying (just not crazy prices).
We will be going in June, so Air Conditioning is a requirement for the two of us.
A/C and decent size rooms, in City Center appears to be quite limiting -- if that's reality, it's OK.
We would like to be an easy walk to the train station as we plan to use trains to get to the Cotswolds (Moreton-in-Marsh) and Bath.

The Marriott Courtyard City Center gets top reviews. It's a little pricey (to get a decent sized room), but if it is the best option we'll go with it.

Thank you for your feedback

You might try either the Old Bank or the Parsonage. They are owned by the same people. The Old Bank is right in the city center.
We stayed at the Parsonage (back in 2015 I think) and it was very comfortable.

I stayed at the Marriott Courtyard City Center in April of this year and really liked the location. The hotel, of course, was nice, just like most Marriotts, and the location was a quick 5 minute walk to/from the train station. One nice feature, though, was that the area was relatively quiet. You head out of the hotel then walk along a lovely canal that crosses over on Quaking Bridge towards the city center. It was a very pretty area, and there is some beautiful architecture and cool shops along the way.

It was also very close to the Glouchester market, and the bus station for the Airline Bus (if you plan on going directly to or from Heathrow). It may not be applicable, but just saying... :-)

I paid with points so can't speak to the price, but I did enjoy my stay here very much.

Thank you both, Stacy and Mardee!

I will look at the Old Bank and the Parsonage.

The bus to Heathrow might be a nice benefit; we're still deciding whether to go to Windsor for the final day of our trip.

Oxford is perfect for a day trip to Moreton-in-Marsh and the Cotswolds. I assume you will be catching the GoCotswolds tour from Moreton-in-Marsh....good choice.

I would count on (at least) 3 nights in Oxford. One day for the trip to the Cotswolds. One day devoted to walking around seeing Oxford plus possibly a trip to Blenheim Palace.

Note: I noticed that someone already provided you the information on your other thread about how to take the bus from Oxford to Blenheim Palace.

If you did choose to travel to Bath and stay there, two nights staying in Bath will allow you to thoroughly see Bath.
You can see Stonehenge on a (Mad Max) day tour from Bath if you wish.

Back to your original question
Premier Inn Oxford City Centre (Westgate) hotel is a good budget option for Oxford.

srepoley, you might want to start your own thread to ask this question, rather than piggyback on another member's thread. That way you'll get a response via email rather than the OP (original poster).

Thank you Rebecca, for your feedback and perspective.

Our reasoning was to minimize how the number of hotel changes, and Oxford looked like a good base -- for the Cotswolds (half hour train to Moreton-in-Marsh, 1 hour train to Chippenham), Bath (1 hour train) and Blenheim Palace. It will also be our last place before heading home from Heathrow. Nice to know about that Stonehedge option; I have seen it once before, about 35 years ago.

We're looking at possible tour options from Moreton-in-Marsh. We heard such great things about Genny and TourGems. Bummer that she will retire in March. She provided some recommendations. We might also rely on a combination of the local bus line 801 and local taxis.

Steve, you are welcome.
I certainly see where you are coming from, with you trying not to jump around changing hotels.
I did not know (when I wrote my other post) that Oxford would be your last stop on your trip; so yes, it makes perfect sense to stay there as a base and travel to Bath as a day trip.

Since you're using Oxford as a base, I'm sure you're aware that a coach (bus) leaves Oxford and goes directly to Heathrow. Convenient to take this early on the day of your flight out.

About Cotswolds tours; I highly recommend this company:
Go Cotswolds tour company, leaving from Moreton-in-Marsh, a Cotswolds village that's a short train ride from Oxford:
https://www.gocotswolds.co.uk/

GoCotswolds is owned and operated by Tom and his wife, natives of Stratford-Upon-Avon. We have taken their tours several times and been pleased with them.

They have two trips doing different villages:
https://www.gocotswolds.co.uk/product/cotswolds-in-a-day/
https://www.gocotswolds.co.uk/product/secret-cotswolds/

And another trip with a walking tour of villages.

and a trip that goes to Bath, as well as a couple of Cotswolds villages:
https://www.gocotswolds.co.uk/product/bath-southern-cotswolds-tour/
You may want to take this tour to Bath instead of the train, because the Go Cotswolds tour goes to Castle Combe as well, and you had said you really wanted to see it (on your other thread).

It sounds like a great trip you have planned! Best wishes.

P.S. You are better off taking these tours around the Cotswolds, rather than piecing it together by bus and taxi (no Uber in the Cotswolds). Reason is, the tours take you directly and quickly to the villages of interest, so you see more, and spend less time waiting around for a bus from one village to another....time consuming, as you may wait a long time for each ride.

The tours are in a small Mercedes min van, comfy seats, AC, and commentary by the driver. You are given plenty of time in each village to walk around, take photos, get some lunch. I recommend the Broadway Deli, if you take the tour that goes to Broadway.

You'll be glad you chose one of these tours rather than piecing it together yourself...I was.

Again...best wishes & happy trip planning!

Would NOT recommend the Royal Oxford. It does have AC, price is decent and is is right next to train station, which I guess would put it on the edge of city center. However, rooms were pretty drab and when with there with a group rooms several rooms were not cleaned very well.

Thank you so much Rebecca! This is fantastic input. I have had mixed experience with other tours (primarily Spain). However, as you describe it here, I can very well see the benefit of the tour compared to going on-our-own-piecemeal.

I am quite keen on a tour that begins in Moreton-in-Marsh, which is just 33 minutes by train from Oxford!

Something I was thinking of, after reviewing the trains and timing, would be to take the train from Oxford to Bath, and from Bath have a RT taxi for a short visit to Castlecombe. So I am very excited to see your recommendation for this tour as a better alternative: https://www.gocotswolds.co.uk/product/bath-southern-cotswolds-tour/ I will certainly check it out as well.

Thank you also for your good words and kind wishes.

Steve, you're welcome. Glad to help.

You will want to make reservations ahead of time for the GoCotswolds tours. You can do this at their website, which I've given in my other post. It's not too early right now to make those if you're going in June. Their tours are popular and dates can fill up.

Best wishes.

Thank you Rebecca.

We are planning to make our final decision this weekend and book Monday/early this coming week.
One other tour operator is already booked for the week we will be there -- you are spot on about booking early!

Best regards
