Hotel recommendation for solo woman in London

Hello, I will be traveling to London in May for one week. I have visited once before so I am somewhat familiar. I am looking for recommendations for a moderate priced hotel near a tube station that would feel comfortable for an older (70s) female. I stayed at K+K South Kensington last trip but it is closed due to renovations. I did like South Kensington. Since I plan to go to the theatre in the evening, the walk from tube station to hotel is important. The posts on this forum on this subject are 8-10 years old. I'm sure things have changed a lot in that time. Any insights would be helpful.

Hi, I'm another older female solo traveler who also likes the Premier Inn hotels. I'm staying at the Premier Inn County Hall (South Bank) in late March, but there are many PIs in London that you can choose from. https://www.premierinn.com/gb/en/home.html

Keep in mind that the earlier you book, the cheaper your rate will be. Here are some recent threads that might be helpful:

I can recommend https://ashburn-hotel.co.uk/. It’s just a block away from the Gloucester Rd. tube station and the Piccadilly line is very convenient. The neighborhood feels very safe. We were there in 2022 and I’m going back in August with my daughter.

If you're willing to venture outside of South Ken, would you consider Bloomsbury (by the British Museum)? Depending where exactly you stay, its very close to Russell Square, Holborn, Tottenham Court Road or Goodge Street stations. There are many mid to budget price hotels. I can personally recommend the Morgan, Celtic and Ridgemount hotels, but there are dozens of others.

Bloomsbury is short walking distance to Soho and the West End for the theatre.

If you are talking about the K & K hotel near the Earls Court Station, I'm going to suggest the Resident Kensington hotel.

It's one block from the Earls Court Station--east, not north west, and I've been staying there for years. It's a 3-5 minute walk from the tube station depending on how fast you walk.

It's a four start hotel with five star service.

I've been to London a few times solo now and really like the Hub by Premier Inn London-King's Cross. It's an easy walk to the Tube and I've never felt unsafe walking around at night. There is a regular Premier Inn slightly closer to the Tube station, but it has always been more expensive and I've opted for the cheaper Hub instead. Plenty of food options nearby and a couple small grocery markets for snacks and drinks. (Note: they do not have refrigerators or microwaves in the room.) There is a bar in the lobby that has always been happy to provide me with ice cubes also. I really don't think you can go wrong with any of the Premier Inns...I've stayed at others in Bath, Dorchester and London Islington with consistent experiences. I do tend to bring or buy some softer toilet paper, and some hand soap since I didn't care for the herbal scent last time I was there. :)

The last time I was in London was in 2016. I was 70 at the time. I felt very safe in the Holborn neighborhood where I stayed for a week in a deluxe studio apartment at the Citidines Prestige Holborn Covent Garden. It's an aparthotel with the benefits of both. It may be a bit late or too early because of renovation work being done to get one like that, but the other rooms are equally as nice and the studio prices are very reasonable for a week stay.

Earlier in the month of May is cheaper than later. When you click on the link you can see a map that shows the Holborn tube station about a block away. You can expand that map to see more of the area in greater detail and there are lots of theaters relatively close. It's actually closer to the theatre district than South Kensington.

It's also close to the British Museum and there was a Boots and 2 grocery stores nearby that had great fresh prepared takeaway meals -- especially the tika masala. That wasn't much of a surprise since it's a student area. There were also plenty of places to eat nearby, but I mostly ate in the apartment for breakfast, out for a late lunch often at a museum restaurant and back in the apartment after dark for dinner. At the time the breakfast downstairs didn’t look very impressive and you had to pay extra for it.

They have good laundry facilities on the ground floor which I used twice. Once when I arrived from Winchester and once later in the week while my apartment was being cleaned.

Many buses stopped across the street. I used them exclusively to get around until the day I flew home because I wasn't in a hurry and I wanted to see stuff along the way. The tube from Holborn station very conveniently went straight to Heathrow.

The apartment was small and the kitchenette minimal. It had an under counter fridge freezer, a 2 burner counter stove, a toaster, a microwave, a small dishwasher and a kettle. It was adequate for my needs although I had to make do with instant coffee in the apartment. Downstairs in the lobby and the breakfast area, there was real brewed coffee for free.

I happened to be there for the celebration of the Queen's birthday. I watched it on TV in my room until I heard this loud roaring sound. I looked out the window and saw the jets go by very low and seemingly right down the street. Then I saw them on TV. That was definitely cool.

The only theatre event I attended that week was a matinee of Midsummer Night's Dream at the Globe. Of course, that was spectacular since I was on the front row of the first balcony almost in the center.

Holborn may not be an area on your radar, but it definitely worked for me.
