We are going to be in London for the first time for 4 days then taking a 7 day cruise out of Southampton. When we dock we are staying one more night before flying home out of Heathrow. Are there areas not terrible far from the airport that will give us some things to explore and do for our last night? Assuming we want to get to the airport a couple hours ahead of the flight and don’t want to have a big travel time to the airport in the morning. Our flight out is at 11:00AM
Our friends that we are traveling with have booked a hotel basically at the airport and would like to see if there is a better option….TIA
Windsor is not far from LHR.
The airport hotels are convenient for visiting Windsor castle.
You should be at the airport 3 hours ahead of your transatlantic flight. Windsor or the airport would be suitable hotel bases.
Richmond. Lovely neighborhood.
If walkers the large Richmond Park can’t be beat. Seeing the fallow deer is quite special.
If you booked a room at the Richmond Premiere Inn on Lower Mortlake its a 10 minute stroll to the Lions Gate Entrance to Kew Gardens.
Can also walk from Richmond along the Thames path to the Ham House National Trust property.
Richmond High Street is worth exploring.
If you have young grandchildren visit the Alligators Mouth bookstore. ( after COVID closures I have no idea if it’s still open) . Adjacent to it is pleasant Angel and Crown pub.
Have a nice meal at the Orange Tree Pub or the Dragon Inn.
Can use the Tube, a bus or a taxi to return LHR.
I took a taxi last July from where I was staying in Richmond ( my friends home) to Terminal 3 at Heathrow. 20 minute ride. Can’t recall the price but paid via a tap CC. Tipped the driver with a £2 coin.
I personally think that you can’t beat the Sofitel at Terminal 5 for a night before a flight out of Heathrow. So easy to base there and then travel to Richmond or Windsor .
